Abstract: A method and a system for a handheld communication device is provided. The method includes: a testing a printed circuit board PCB assembly; identifying an emission point in the PCB; allocating a frequency radio (RF) absorber over or close to the emission point where the emission point is a potential source of electromagnetic interference (EMI) other than electronic components mounted on the PCB. The system includes a PCB assembly; and an RF absorber planar plate secured over or close to the emission point, for reducing the EMI from the emission point. A handheld communication device includes an antenna system and the PCB assembly with the RF absorber for isolating the antenna system from self-interference in the device.

Abstract: A portable terminal has a first enclosure of a housing having a first interior to contain a plurality of electronic components and a ground. The terminal has a second enclosure of the housing for coupling to the first enclosure, the second enclosure having a second interior to contain an antenna and for facilitating at least one of receiving or transmitting of electromagnetic (EM) signals between the antenna and an environment external to the second enclosure. The terminal has an EM shield positioned at an interface between the first interior and the second interior, the EM shield including electrically conductive material to absorb EM radiation generated by the plurality of electronic components. Also included is an electrically conductive coupling to couple the EM shield to the ground of the first enclosure.

Abstract: The present patent disclosure describes a system and method for maintaining persistent secure connections between a terminal and a host. The system comprises a session manager component for storing session information associated with a terminal identifier (ID) of the terminal, the session information comprising a client connection ID for identifying a persistent secure client connection and a terminal connection ID for identifying a secure terminal connection. The system also comprises a connection manager component for establishing communication between the persistent secure client connection, identified by the client connection ID, and the secure terminal connection, identified by the terminal connection ID.

Abstract: A portable terminal is provided. The portable terminal includes operational components including a display including a viewing area observable by a user and a keyboard including an input area operable by the user; and a non-folding housing mounting the operational components, the housing including a first section for holding the display and a second section for holding the keyboard, the first section and the second section being configured such that the input area of the keyboard mounted in the second section is at an angle with respect to the viewing area of the display mounted in the first section.

Abstract: An expansion system for portable electronic devices is provided. A portable electronic device includes a main logic board and a battery component. The device includes a package for enclosing components of the device that is sealed to prevent ingress of foreign material from the surrounding environment. A mounting interface is provided that extends into the internal space of the package. The mounting interface mounts an expansion component that expands functionality of the device so that it is physically and mechanically spaced from the main logic board. The device may include an expansion interface mounted on the main logic board for logical communication between the main logic board and the expansion component.

Abstract: A user credential management system and method for managing user credentials are provided. The user credential management system comprises an authentication module for authenticating a user login to a mobile device, and a message transforming module for associating a user credential to a message sent from the mobile device to a server. The method comprising the steps of authenticating a user login to a mobile device, locating a user credential associated with the user login, and associating the user credential to a message between the mobile device and a server.

Abstract: A handheld terminal is provided. The handheld terminal includes a housing, a component for operating the handheld terminal, and a pocket for forming, in the housing, a space for holding the component individually and separating the space from a main logic circuit. The pocket has a window for a connection between the component and the main logic circuit. The handheld terminal includes a bezel placed on the component, and a combiner for removable engaging the bezel with the housing.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for configuring an access list on a first computing device for defining communication between the first computing device and a plurality of computing devices in a Bluetooth communication local network. The method comprises: generating a discovery request at the first computing device, the discovery request targeted to the plurality of computing devices and configured to generate a list of discovered devices for communication; and identifying at the first computing device, via a user interface, at least one selected computing device from the discovered devices being permitted to access the first computing device, the at least one selected computing device being defined with at least one device identifier to identify each of the at least one selected computing device in the access list, the access list for subsequent use in preventing access between the first computing device and each computing device not on the access list.

Abstract: A method and system is provided barcode scanning using image calibration for a captured image of a target barcode. The method comprises: receiving color image values for the captured image from a color image sensor; determining a set of coefficients for calibrating the captured image in dependence upon predefined sensor sensitivity profiles, the predefined sensor sensitivity profiles for defining spectral sensitivity values for the color image sensor for a range of predetermined wavelengths. Once the set of coefficients are obtained, they are applied to the color image values to obtain calibrated image values such as to provide color balancing of the captured image.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for barcode scanning for a target barcode comprising: receiving color image values for a captured image of the target barcode from at least one color image sensor; and extracting luminosity values for each pixel of the captured image from the color image values to define greyscale image values corresponding to the color image values. Once the luminosity values are defined, they are provided as greyscale image values to a greyscale barcode decoder for subsequent processing thereof.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling the read range of a portable RFID reader is provided. The system includes a trigger system including a mechanical actuator manually positionable by a user and a sensor for sensing the position of the actuator. The read range of the RFID reader is changed based on the sensing result.

Abstract: There is provided a housing for a rugged handheld device, which includes: a main housing including: a main circuit board space sealed from an exterior environment, for supporting a main circuit board; and a compartment space for supporting a removable compartment for holding a device component for operation of the handheld device, such as a docking connector board, a display assembly, a keyboard assembly, where the compartment space is sealed from the external environment by a removable compartment cover for sealing the compartment space from the exterior environment, independently from the sealing of the main circuit board space and/or the device component placed into the compartment space.

Abstract: Described is an electronic connector. The electronic connector has a substrate body for housing electronic pins and a cable. The substrate body is fabricated from a first material, such as hard plastic and has at least one passage from its exterior to its interior. The overmold is fabricated from a resilient material having a lower melting point than the first material. The resilient material is overmolded onto the substrate body and flows through the at least one passage in the substrate body and forms a gasket on the connecting surface of the substrate body.

Abstract: A method and system for power control for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag reading is provided. The system includes a power amplifier for providing an RF transmit signal for the RFID tag reading. The RF transmit signal is provided to an antenna for radiating the transmit signal. The power of the radiated transmit signal defining a read range for the RFID tag reading. The system includes an attenuator provided between the power amplifier and the antenna for controlling the power of the radiated transmit signal to adjust the read range. A handheld RFID reader may include the system. The method includes calibrating the output power of a reader having a power amplifier and an attenuator provided between the power amplifier and an antenna. The step of calibrating includes at least one of controlling power of the power amplifier in its linear region, and controlling attenuation level of the attenuator.

Abstract: An expansion system for portable electronic devices is provided. A portable electronic device includes: a main logic board; an expansion device for expanding functionality of the portable electronic device; a flexible interconnection for logically connecting the expansion device to the main logic board; and a package for enclosing the main logic board and the expansion device together. The main logic board is mechanically isolated from the expansion device. The expansion device is physically spaced from the main logic board when enclosed in the package. An intrinsic expansion for a portable electronic device includes: an expansion board for expanding functionality of the portable electronic device, an expansion interface for logically connecting the expansion board to a main logic board of the portable electronic device, and a flexible interconnection for interconnecting the expansion board and the expansion interface.

Abstract: There is provided a system and method for managing communication ports on a computer device. The method comprises the steps of scanning the system file structure, determining port assignments for active devices from a known location in the system file structure, scanning additional locations in the system file structure, determining port assignments for dynamic devices from the additional locations in the system file structure, and displaying the active devices, dynamic devices and the corresponding determined port assignments. The system comprises a memory for storing instructions, and a processor for executing the instructions stored in the memory.
