Patent number: 7540406Abstract: A system for displaying audio content with text including a book holder and a book. The book holder identifies which book of a plurality is placed in the holder by detecting magnetic indicators in specific locations and arrangements which are unique to each book. The page of the book which a user views at any given time is identified by detection of ambient light, by detection of a number of circuit elements in parallel, by detection of progressively stacked magnetic sensors, or by microwave reflection.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2007Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Assignee: Publications International, Ltd.Inventor: Jin Song

Publication number: 20050180809Abstract: A binding system comprising a spine adapted to be removeably secured within a base and a clip adapted to connect to the spine. The clip may be threaded through the aperture of a leaf to movably secure the leaf to the spine. Further, the spine may be elongated with a pair of mushroom-shaped ends. The base may further include a well having end walls with opposed dimples. The mushroom shaped heads may fit within the dimples to secure the spine to the base. The spine may include an aperture into which at least a portion of the clip may be inserted to secure the clip to the spine. The at least one leaf may be permitted to lie substantially flat upon the base when the spine is secured within the well.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 13, 2004Publication date: August 18, 2005Applicant: Publications International, Ltd.Inventors: Yan Wu, Richard Maddrell

Patent number: 6041215Abstract: An apparatus for producing audible sounds in response to visual indicia in the nature of an electronic book. The electronic book is constructed from a plurality of leaves which may be formed from a continuous accordion folded sheet or individual modular folded sheets joined back-to-back to form the pages of the book. During construction, a spacer is internally provided within each leaf to create at least one internal passageway opening at one end of the leaves at a location forming the book's spine. An electronic circuit having pressure sensitive switches and conductive paths is provided on the surface of a dielectric substrate using conductive ink. The switches are arranged on elongated members which are inserted into a respective internal passageway within the leaves of the book. By activation of a switch by pressure applied to visual indicia on the leaves, audible sounds are produced by an on board electronic module.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1998Date of Patent: March 21, 2000Assignee: Publications International, Ltd.Inventors: Richard Maddrell, Thomas L. Maser
