Patent number: 4620480Abstract: A method and apparatus for conversion of a web fed letterpress unit (10) into a web fed offset printing press unit (42) having a main frame (12) an internal support such as an internal auxiliary frame (44) inside the main frame for receiving cylinders, a pair of offset plate cylinders (46 and 46a) for mounting printing plates thereon, an inking arrangement (16, 18 and 20) for applying films of ink to the plates, and a pair of blanket cylinders (48 and 48a) in close proximity to a position for respective rolling contact with the plates on the plate cylinder and the other blanket cylinder. An offset press gear train (54) is installed outside the frames with the shafts for the cylinders extended through bores (60b, 61b, 62b and 112) provided in the main frame. The offset unit also includes external support such as external auxiliary frame (45) affixed to the outside of the main frame between the main frame and the gear train.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1980Date of Patent: November 4, 1986Assignee: Publishers Equipment CorporationInventor: Carl J. Patent number: 4445881Abstract: An improvement in the method and apparatus for folding newspaper in the "collect" mode. Inside and outside web sections are printed with the same number of lines and transferred to a folding cylinder which collects them in overlapping relation. Expanding means incorporated in the body of the cylinder expand its effective radius to permit the trailing edge of the outside section to be cut to a length equal to that of the inside section without recutting the inside section. The collected sections are then passed through second fold rollers for final folding.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1982Date of Patent: May 1, 1984Assignee: Publishers Equipment CorporationInventors: Lee Bullen, Carl J. Patent number: 4437855Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the cutoff length of a duel web folding and cutting assembly. The method comprises steps of reducing the support surface under the working parts of the folding cylinder along the length of a roller which contacts the web such that the working parts may be replaced without modification. Further, the cutting rollers reduced in diameter must be moved closer to the folding cylinder. One method of moving the cutting cylinder is by reboreing the mounting hole for one end of the cutting cylinder on the drive side to enable placement of sleeve having eccentric center holes in each side frame to move the cylinder closer. The other method comprises steps of cutting the driven side of the cutting cylinder support shaft off positioning it in an auxiliary side frame mounted inside of the old side frame and driving cutting cylinder with gears positioned inide of the auxiliary side frame.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1982Date of Patent: March 20, 1984Assignee: Publishers Equipment CorporationInventor: Lee Bullen

Patent number: 4250809Abstract: A web fed offset printing press unit (42) including a frame (12), an auxiliary frame (44), a pair of plate cylinders (46 and 46a), a first blanket cylinder (48), a second blanket cylinder (50), a common impression cylinder (56) and an auxiliary impression cylinder (58) is disclosed. The second blanket cylinder is swung bodily through a short radius arc between a first end position in rolling contact with the common impression cylinder and a second end position in rolling contact with the auxiliary impression cylinder. In one arrangement, the second blanket cylinder is journaled in an eccentric sleeve (76) at each end and linkage (86) is switchable between the two modes of operation with a throw-off position associated with each.A method for converting a web fed letterpress unit (10) into a web fed offset printing press unit for multicolor or two-sided printing is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1979Date of Patent: February 17, 1981Assignee: Publishers Equipment CorporationInventor: Donald A.
