Patent number: 7341833Abstract: The invention relates to novel nucleic acid reference standards comprising a nucleic acid comprising a known target sequence bound with a microparticulate binding agent where the binding agent includes liposomes, polyamines (e.g., nylon), siliceous compounds (e.g., silica gel, fumed silica, diatomaceous earth, glass particles, amine-modified silica, and the like), zeolites (e.g., low alumina zeolyte), polystyrene (e.g., amine-modified polystyrene, carboxy-polystyrene particles, and the like), chitin, chitosan, and combinations of these compounds. The reference standard is useful for use as a standard in any nucleic acid assay where the presence or absence of a nucleic acid of interest is being assessed. The reference standard is stable and provides a control for assessing whether the nucleic acid assay was performed properly. The invention further relates to methods of producing such reference standards and kits for using and producing the same pursuant to the teachings of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2004Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Maine Molecular Quality Controls, Inc.Inventors: Clark A. Rundell, Joan Gordon

Patent number: 7200200Abstract: An X-ray fluorescence measuring system and related measuring methods are disclosed, the system using X-ray energy at a level of less than 80 KeV may be directed toward a material, such as coal. The energy fluoresced may be detected (10) and used to measure the elemental composition of the material, including trace elements. The material may be moving or stationary.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2002Date of Patent: April 3, 2007Assignee: Quality Control, Inc.Inventors: Melvin J. Laurila, Claus C. Bachmann

Patent number: 6308739Abstract: The present seal (10) is a disc of a rigid but deformable plastic, the top surface of which is cylindrical, and the bottom of which has a circular groove (12) containing a flexible sealing mechanism (15). This seal is suited for use in a ganged rotor valve (22) having two or more levels of independent fluid passageways through the rotor along the length thereof. Each level will usually have two independent L-shaped passageways (34, 35). The seal (10) of this invention fits into the rotor about each of the ends of the passageways (34, 35) to seal the passageway between the rotor and the valve body (22).Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1999Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: Quality Controls, Inc.Inventors: David J. Barbuto, Theodore T. Evangelo, James B. Horman, Jr.

Patent number: 4548385Abstract: A rotor valve has a set of sealing members or inserts positioned in longitudinal channels formed on the outer surface of a cylindrical rotor. A resilient O-ring snuggly engaged in a groove in the rear surface of each insert urges it against a surrounding rotor chamber formed in a valve body. Due to the resilience of the O-ring, the fluid seal between the rotor and the rotor chamber does not bind due to contaminants or extreme variations in temperature. The sealing inserts are formed of a deformable material. Fluid pressure acting on the inserts deforms them to produce a lateral squeezing force on the O-ring. The interaction between the inserts and the O-ring enhances the integrity of both the seal between the inserts and the surrounding rotor chamber and the seal established by the O-ring itself between the rotor and the insert.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1982Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: Quality Controls, Inc.Inventor: David J.
