Patent number: 7333830Abstract: Methods and apparatus for synchronizing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication within a multi-mode radio. A multi-mode radio can support communication with a WLAN and at least one other wireless communication system. The multiple systems can be distinct and asynchronous. Transmitting, or attempting to transmit, over a WLAN communication link can result in interference that degrades the sensitivity of a receiver in another communication system, or that interferes with a transmission in another communication system. The WLAN transmissions can be synchronized to operation in another communication system by generating a signal that can be coupled to a collision avoidance system in the WLAN transmitter. The signal can operate to cause the WLAN transmitter to reschedule the transmission to another time such that the resources of the multi-mode radio are conserved and the WLAN interference is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2005Date of Patent: February 19, 2008Assignee: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence Jarrett Malone

Publication number: 20070280338Abstract: A high dynamic range low noise direct conversion transmitter within a multimode apparatus having multiple transmit and receive operating modes is described. The direct conversion transmitter can include a digital baseband coupled to a low noise direct conversion stage. A high dynamic range current folding digital to analog converter can be used to convert the digital baseband signals to analog representations. A wide dynamic range variable gain baseband amplifier couples the baseband signal to the direct conversion stage. A controllable passive attenuation stage operates to provide further gain control. Carrier feedthrough can be substantially eliminated using a carrier feedthrough cancellation loop that selectively utilizes one of a plurality of receivers configured for one of the multiple receive modes.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2006Publication date: December 6, 2007Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: David Ryan Haub, Daniel Neil Ralston

Publication number: 20070281653Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention adjust an operating mode of a configurable receiver based at least in part on a selected communication service to be provided and an available signal quality. A control unit receives data related to one or more selected communication services to be provided. The control unit also receives information about the environmental operating conditions in which the configurable receiver is operating, via one or more signal quality metrics. The control unit adjusts the operating mode of the configurable receiver by modifying the gain of a received signal, the channel bandwidth, or controlling the synthesizers or equalizers.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2006Publication date: December 6, 2007Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventor: David Ryan Haub

Publication number: 20060154625Abstract: A system and method are provided for communicating a radio frequency (RF) signal. In use, a baseband signal is mixed with a plurality of oscillator signals with different phases in an interleaving manner. The mixed baseband signal is then communicated as an RF signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2006Publication date: July 13, 2006Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence Malone, Lon Christensen

Publication number: 20060154639Abstract: A system and method are provided for direct-conversion of a modulated radio-frequency (RF) signal. After receiving an RF signal, the RF signal is mixed with a plurality of oscillator signals with different phases in an interleaving manner.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2006Publication date: July 13, 2006Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence Malone, Lon Christensen

Publication number: 20060084469Abstract: A multi-mode wireless device having a transceiver including a multi-mode transmitter and a multi-mode receiver. The transmitter can include a multi-mode transmit baseband portion configured to support all of the transmit modes. Similarly, the receiver can include a multi-mode baseband portion that is configured to support all of the receive modes. The transmitter can also include a frequency conversion stage that can convert the output from the transmit baseband portion to the desired transmit frequency. Multiple power amplifiers in parallel, each configured to support one or more of the operating modes, can selectively amplify the transmit signals. The receiver can include multiple low noise amplifiers (LNAs) in parallel, each configured to selectively amplify the received signals of one or more of the operating modes. The output of the LNAs can be coupled to a frequency conversion stage that downconverts the received signals and provides them to the baseband portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2005Publication date: April 20, 2006Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence Malone, Lon Christensen

Publication number: 20050020299Abstract: Multiple wireless communication standards can be supported in a single radio apparatus by time interleaving communications with the multiple communication standards. A single radio can be controlled to time interleave communications standards to successively activate a single communication channel for each of the communication standards. The single radio device can be configured to order the supported communication standards in a hierarchy to provide priority to certain communications. Time interleaving wireless communications over standards that support burst communications, such as time multiplexed wireless communication systems or wireless packet data systems, allows a single radio to seamlessly support multiple standards with no loss of data.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2004Publication date: January 27, 2005Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence Malone, Aaron Lamb

Publication number: 20040209591Abstract: A reconfigurable baseband filter for use in a multimode communication system is disclosed. One or more filter elements can each be configured as a plurality of sub-elements. The value of each of the filter elements can be varied by switching between at least two of the plurality of sub-elements. Switching noise within a desired passband can be reduced by switching at a rate that is greater than the desired passband. The switching noise in the passband can be further reduced by pseudo-randomly switching between the sub-elements. The filter can use a delta-sigma modulator to generate a pseudo-random switching signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 20, 2004Publication date: October 21, 2004Applicant: Quorum Systems, Inc.Inventors: Brian C.
