  • Patent number: 6702567
Abstract: A shuttle blow molding machine having two groups of mold units located on opposite sides of a series of workstations spaced along a horizontal workstation path. Each mold unit includes a mold that reciprocates in a direction transverse to the workstation path between a retracted position that is spaced from the workstation path and an extended position aligned with the workstation path. The mold units within each group are located in side-by-side relation adjacent each other and each group is indexed as a single unit along a path parallel to the workstation path. The transverse motion of the molds between their retracted and extended positions allows one group to be retracted out of the way while the other group advances through the workstations.

  • Patent number: 6649120
Abstract: A blow molding apparatus (10) including four molds (21, 22, 23, 24) that move into a common parison receiving position (26) from directions different from the directions that the molds move out of the parison receiving position (26). When in the parison receiving position (26), each mold receives, encloses and severs a length of parison then shapes the parison during blow molding. Two molds (21, 22) alternately move in respective first and second radial directions (36, 40) from the parison receiving position (26) to respective first and second outer positions (38, 39), to a common article take-out position (45) and then back to the parison receiving position (26) from a third radial direction (96). The third radial direction is angularly spaced between the first and second radial directions.

  • Patent number: 6358037
Abstract: A flash removing apparatus is provided which has a pair of blades driven by an actuator through a linkage assembly, simultaneously and in opposite directions, between a bottle receiving position and a closed position to aid in removing flash from a plastic product disposed on the blades. Preferably, the blades can also be moved to a fully open position to permit a bottle to pass between the blades and increase manufacturing flexibility and efficiency of the apparatus. The linkage assembly has a center link rotatable about a fixed pivot and at least one link arm connected to the center link and operably connected to the actuator to unfold and fold the linkage assembly in response to movement of the actuator between its advanced and retracted positions. The folding and unfolding of the linkage assembly moves the blades between their open and closed positions in cycles to remove flash from consecutive plastic products.

  • Patent number: 6082078
Abstract: A method is provided for joining a flexible container to a threaded closure. According to the method, a flexible container is inflated with pressurized gas before applying torque to the container. A base of the flexible container is engaged in a container receptacle of a capping apparatus, then the capping apparatus is operated to cause a neck of the flexible container to engage a threaded opening in the closure. The bottle is then inflated and the capping apparatus is operated to thread the neck of the flexible container into the opening in the closure by causing relative rotation between the flexible container and the closure. The pressurized gas stiffens the flexible container and prevents it from buckling or twisting under torque loads applied to screw the container into the closure.

  • Patent number: 4919607
Abstract: A rotary blow molding machine includes a plurality of mold stations on a rotary carousel. Each mold station includes a pair of mold sections movable toward and away from one another to close or open the mold sections. When closed, the mold sections define a mold blowing cavity and a mold mouth communicating with the blowing cavity and opening external of the closed mold sections. A blowing/neck finishing mechanism preferably is mounted on one of the mold sections for movement between a retracted position where the blow pin is offset from the mold mouth so as not to hinder capturing of the parison in the mold station and a blowing position where the blow pin is inserted in the mold mouth. A pivotal linkage moves the blow pin in an arcuate path toward the mold mouth to insert the blow pin therein to blow a parison received in the blowing cavity and away from the mouth to extract the blow pin from the mouth after parison blowing.

  • Patent number: 4902217
Abstract: The blow molding machine includes a rotary carousel having a plurality of mold stations thereon with each mold station including a pair of openable and closeable mold sections. A rotary take-out mechanism removes a blown article from each pair of mold sections as they pass the take-out mechanism. In particular, the take-out mechanism includes a take-out member inserted into the blown article to grip same while the mold sections are closed. The take-out member is carried on a turret arm rotated in oscillatory manner about the axis of revolution of the carousel and in synchronism therewith to cause the inserted take-out member to follow rotation of the mold sections as they are opened. When the mold sections are sufficiently opened, the take-out member is rotated about another axis so as to remove the blown article from between the opened mold sections. The take-out member is carried on a spindle that is rotatably indexable on the turret arm about the other axis.
