Patent number: 4561358Abstract: Apparatus for conveying articles of length L through an irradiation beam of width B, where L substantially exceeds B. The articles are supported on carriers which are suspended between and more along two tracks positioned with the beam therebetween. The carriers travel for a first distance with the articles extending transversely relative to the two tracks to permit close-packing of the carriers as they move toward the beam. As each carrier approaches the beam, it is reoriented relative to the two tracks to increase the exposure angle defined between (a) the carrier dimension along which the article extends and (b) the width of the beam. After exiting from under the beam each carrier is preferably returned to a transverse travelling orientation relative to the two tracks. The invention further includes the directing of carriers along monorails enroute to and/or from the two tracks.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1983Date of Patent: December 31, 1985Assignee: Radiation Dynamics, Inc.Inventor: Robert G. Patent number: 4484341Abstract: An apparatus and system is provided for utilizing an electron beam machine to selectively and alternatively irradiate materials with electrons of X-rays; the conversion between electron radiation and X-radiation being achieved by interposing a plate of low Z material such as aluminum between the beam and the material to be irradiated, the plate having its surface facing the electron beam covered with an X-ray generating or high Z material. The plate serves as a mechanical support for the high Z material, an electron capture body and to some extent as a heat sink. Materials to be irradiated are disposed in a cart and are conveyed under the beam with the plate being interposed whenever a material to receive X-rays passes thereunder; the carts being employed to readily permit multiple passes of the material to be treated with X-rays under the beam whereby heat build up in the X-ray generating target placed over each cart may be maintained at acceptable levels.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1981Date of Patent: November 20, 1984Assignee: Radiation Dynamics, Inc.Inventor: Robert Luniewski

Patent number: 4482811Abstract: Apparatus for guiding a cable travelling along a longitudinal path through a beam of radiation in a shielded chamber, the apparatus including rollers disposed about the cable in a manner which prevents the leakage of radiation via apertures in the chamber through which the cable enters and exits. Specifically, the apparatus includes sets of rollers spaced at longitudinal intervals along the cable, the rollers in each set being positioned at angular intervals about the longitudinal axis of the cable. An angular offsetting of rollers in different sets, so that a roller in one set is longitudinally aligned with the spacing between rollers in other sets, is provided. By selecting rollers of prescribed dimensions, by placing the rollers at prescribed angular intervals in each set, and by angularly offsetting a plurality of sets by prescribed angles, a plurality of sets of rollers--when placed proximate to the entrance or exit to an aperture--can preclude radiation leakage through the aperture.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1982Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Assignee: Radiation Dynamics, Inc.Inventor: Robert G. Patent number: 4361812Abstract: The voltage at the high voltage terminal of a first particle accelerator is stabilized particularly during pulsed operation by producing a compensating current at its accelerator terminal such as to maintain the voltage of the terminal constant. The compensating current is produced by a second particle accelerator coupled between the accelerator terminal and a high voltage terminal connected with a high voltage DC power supply. The charged particle flow through the second particle accelerator is such that the charge on the accelerator terminal of the first accelerator remains substantially constant even though the voltage at the high voltage terminal drops during simultaneous pulsed operation of both particle accelerators.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1978Date of Patent: November 30, 1982Assignee: Radiation Dynamics, Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Farrell, Chester C. Thompson, Jr.

Patent number: 4287011Abstract: A method of making a bond structure and a bond structure are provided that produce concurrently a peel bond and a lap bond. One end of a sheet to be joined to a second end of the same or other sheet is folded back on itself and on end of the other member inserted. The two pairs of contacting surfaces thus formed are subsequently bonded to each other. The bonding may be by any means and the clamping force across the bond during bonding need be applied from one side of the sheet only. By insuring that the peel bond fails before the material, a flat lap bond may be achieved by causing only the peel bond to fail.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1979Date of Patent: September 1, 1981Assignee: Radiation Dynamics, Inc.Inventor: Rodney L.
