  • Patent number: 7362008
Abstract: An apparatus for selectively coupling electrical connectors. The apparatus includes a common connector electrically coupled to a secondary connector and a primary connector electrically coupled to the common connector through an isolation means. The isolation means operates to electrically isolate the primary connector upon detection of an external connection to the secondary connector.

  • Patent number: 7287260
Abstract: An apparatus for reading an optical disc. The apparatus includes a housing and a spindle positioned to rotatably support the optical disc adjacent to the exterior of the housing. A light emitting scan head is aligned to read the optical disc as it rotates. A protective member, having a silhouette that is smaller than the area of the optical disc, is movably coupled to the housing between a first position that aligns the protective member to prevent extraneous emission of light from the scan head, and a second position that enables access to mount the optical disc on the spindle. The apparatus may be an audio CD player. The rotating optical disc may be positioned to extend beyond the surface of the housing. A spring disposed between the housing and the protective member, where the spring operates to close the protective member.

  • Patent number: 7120463
Abstract: A network interface cassette for coupling signals between a wireless network and a tape head in a cassette tape player. The network interface cassette includes an enclosure that is conformed to the cassette tape form factor. It contains a transceiver that converts base band signals for radio frequency communications within the wireless network. It also contains a network controller that is coupled to communicate the base band signals with the transceiver. The network controller converts digital audio signals to and from the base band signals. There is an audio processor that converts the digital audio signals to analog audio signals. A coupling means converts the analog audio signals to magnetic audio signals. The coupling means is aligned to couple the magnetic audio signals to the tape head. A power supply with batteries incorporates a spindle driven sensor means to control power and function selection within the device.

  • Patent number: 7050784
Abstract: A weather radio adapted to automatically select a preferred channel of operation. A receiver is coupled to a signal quality circuit that outputs signal quality parameters. A controller is coupled to control the frequency of reception of the receiver and is coupled to receive the signal quality parameters. A memory is used to store several signal quality values, and is coupled to the controller. When the controller receives a stimulus, it controls the receiver to sequentially receive all the weather radio frequencies of reception and store a signal quality value for each. The controller subsequently controls the receiver to receive one of the frequencies of operation based upon a comparison of the stored values to select a preferred one of them. The radio is therefore programmed to receive the preferred channel and monitor NOAA Weather Radio transmissions for the local FIPS codes and other weather alert messages.

  • Patent number: 6826843
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining the orientation of Earth's magnetic poles. A magnet is pivotally coupled to a support and is free to orient itself with Earth's magnetic pole. A detector is fixed relative to the support and outputs a signal indicative of the magnet orientation. A display displays an indication of the relative orientation of Earth's magnetic pole consistent with the output signal. Plural detectors can be employed to increase resolution of the apparatus. The detectors can be optical detectors. A shutter is fixed to the magnet and the detectors sense the shutter position. The shutter has a patterned formed thereon with transmissive portions and opaque portions. Shutter blinds are added to limit the dispersion of light.

  • Patent number: 6684174
Abstract: A wind gauge apparatus and method. An illustrative embodiment includes a microphone positioned to engage wind pressure from a first relative direction and a controller coupled to receive an audio signal from the microphone. The controller compares the audio signal with plural threshold values, representative of wind pressure levels, and determines a first wind pressure level incident upon the microphone. Filtering and gain controls are used to condition the audio signal output from the microphone. Plural microphones are employed to allow that detection of wind direction and magnitude about a compass of directions. Digital signal processing is employed to process data. In an illustrative embodiment, the wind direction and magnitude data are used to recommend a golf club size adjustment and a golf swing direction adjustment to the user, who has taken a measurement of the wind with respect to a reference golf swing direction.

  • Patent number: 6658115
Abstract: A method and apparatus for high fidelity duplexing, local transmission and reception of audio-signals transmitted from sources such as stereos, televisions, or musical instruments is taught. According to these teachings, high fidelity wireless stereophonic transmission system having a plurality of audio channels are realized. An oscillator is electrically connected to the first audio channel to provide a first carrier frequency upon which the data of the first audio channel is imposed. The first carrier frequency is then combined with a second audio channel's data forming a composite signal. The composite signal is then imposed on signal generated by a second oscillator. This second oscillator provides a carrier frequency for a frequency modulated (FM) transmitter. The signal from the FM transmitter is received by a receiver and the respective signal's of the two audio channels are demodulated and used to drive speakers.
