    Abstract: A control system for a heating, ventilating and air conditioning system is provided. The control system regulates a temperature of a multi-zone building using only a single thermostat or set point, and a temperature element in each of the zones. The control system receives inputs from the temperature elements and uses the inputs and a control algorithm to control temperature according to the set point and to minimize the differences between the temperature elements in the different zones. In a two-zone building, a single damper is used. In a building with a larger number of zones, the number of dampers required is the same as the number of zones, less one damper.

    Abstract: A flow control valve for selectively routing a coolant in a dual-zone heater system is provided. The flow control valve includes a housing and a flow control device. The housing includes an inlet port, a bypass outlet, a front heater outlet, and a rear heater outlet communicating through an internal cavity. The flow control device, which can be a cylinder, sphere, etc., is rotatably positioned in the internal cavity. The flow control device has an axial channel and generally radial aperture. The axial channel transports the coolant received from the inlet port through the flow control device, and the aperture delivers the coolant to one or more of the bypass outlet, the front heater outlet, and the rear heater outlet as the flow control device is rotated. In this way the circuit is not deadheaded.

As such, the thermostat user is permitted to easily select one of the commonly used thermostat settings without having to navigate through various different menus or screens.     Abstract: A thermostat having a terminal connection mechanism and method that provides ease of installation of the thermostat and the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) wiring is provided. One embodiment allows any wire to be attached to any terminal. This thermostat includes logic for determining an identity of the wire connected to an HVAC system component. The control logic determines a characteristic of the HVAC system component and compares the characteristic to a known characteristic of the HVAC system component. Environmental responses may also be monitored to identify the HVAC component. The terminal of the thermostat may be color coded to further ease installation. Tool-less terminal connectors may also be used to still further ease installation.

    Abstract: A wide input voltage range relay drive circuit allowing a more than 2:1 input voltage variation is provided. The circuit utilizes a scaled and rectified bulk voltage to drive the relay coil. As the monitored bulk voltage increases beyond the relay coil rated voltage, the circuit pulse width multiplexes this bulk voltage to protect the relay coil. The bulk voltage switching does not begin, however, until the relay energizes. To reduce the power dissipation during the PWM switching, of the relay coil, a power dissipating switch is included and held on during the PWM switching events. To further increase relay life, the circuit controls the energizing of the relay coil to actuate the contacts of the relay at or near a zero cross of the power switched thereby.

    Abstract: A method of testing the operational status of remotely distributed hazardous condition detectors is provided. The method utilizes the detector's self-test button to initiate a detector self-test. Once the self-test is complete, the detector's alarm is silenced and a remote self-test signal is sent to the interconnected remote hazardous condition detectors. The remote detectors, on receipt of this signal, will initiate a self-test of their own as if a user had depressed their test button. The user, with the local detector's alarm now silenced, is better able to hear the remotely interconnected detector's alarm. To verify that the remote self-test signal is received, thus verifying the operational integrity of the communications link, the remote detectors may sound an alarm pattern indicative of the receipt of the signal before initiating their self-test.

    Abstract: A control system for managing a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system based on occupancy of an area is provided. The occupancy may be determined by anticipated programming based on time of day zoning, and/or by actual sensed occupancy. In the later, the control system includes an occupancy sensor that communicates with a programmable thermostat. The occupancy sensor is disposed in the area and senses a state of occupancy of the area. The programmable thermostat instructs the HVAC system to adjust the temperature of the area within the structure based on the state of occupancy of that particular area to enhance occupant comfort and energy efficiency. The thermostat may also include programming modes or scripts that may be run to adjust operational control when abnormal occupancy conditions are sensed. Controllable dampers may also be used by the thermostat to achieve micro zoning control of the HVAC system.

A single temperature sensor may be selected to control the HVAC system during these different periods, or multiple sensors may be utilized during the same period.
