Patents Assigned to Rand McNally & Co.
  • Patent number: 4906988
Abstract: Appartus and methods of verifying objects utilize detectable characteristics of a plurality of spaced apart, magnetizable magnetic security regions affixed to the object. Magnetic characteristics for each magnetic region are detected from two different orientations. A verification apparatus senses the magnetic characteristics from two different orientations and compares it to a prestored representative profile previously created. Correspondence between the prestored profile and the currently read characteristics indicates an authentic object. Other objects can be rejected.

  • Patent number: 4630384
Abstract: A disposable self-locking baggage tag made of sufficiently stiff and relatively tear-resistant conventional reinforced kraft paper tape. The tag comprises a rectangular strip having a slit formed therein adjacent one end. Locking means carried by the strip are provided in the form of a locking tab which cooperates with the slit to form a closed loop, or in the form of rows of opposed angled cuts formed in the lateral edges of the strip and adapted to cooperate with the slit to lock the tag into a closed loop of selected size.

  • Patent number: 4614362
Abstract: Tamper-resisting multipart negotiable instruments including at least two webs, their method of manufacture and use are described. The first web includes, on its second surface, a means for transferring an image to a surface in contact therewith when a corresponding image is inscribed on the first surface of that web. The first surface of the second web is in contact with the second surface of the first web and includes image receiving material at least in selected zones, such as destination and fare calculation zones, which is capable of receiving an image transferred from the second surface of the first web. The image receiving material comprises a particulate matrix erasably bonded to the second web, and which is defacable when rubbed with an organic solvent. The selected zones are provided with a machine readable pattern such as a multi-element bar code pattern.

  • Patent number: 4614363
Abstract: A tamper-resisting negotiable instrument, its method of manufacture and use are disclosed. The instrument includes a stack of webs comprising a first web having a lower surface adapted to receive images; a second, removable web, having an image transferring layer on its upper surface in contact with the image receiving surface of the first web and an image receiving layer on its lower surface; and a third removable web including an image transferring layer on its upper surface facing the second web. The image transferring layers comprise selected areas of the web upper surfaces which provide data zones in which specific information is desired to appear. Inscription of an image against the upper surface of the top web in the stack transfers the image from the image transferring layers of the webs therebelow to the lower surfaces of the webs thereabove leaving negative images in the data zones of the image transferring layers.

  • Patent number: 4614367
Abstract: Improvements in tamper-resisting multipart negotiable instruments, such as airline ticket books are disclosed. The books include at least two webs. The first web includes, on its second surface, a medium for transferring an image to the first surface of a second web in contact therewith when a corresponding image is inscribed on the first surface of that web. The first surface of the second web is in contact with the second surface of the first web and includes an image receiving layer capable of receiving an image transferred from the second surface of the first web. The image receiving layer includes a particulate mixture erasably bonded to the second web, which becomes defaced when rubbed with an organic solvent, and which is removable when an adhesive tape is applied to the image receiving layer and is pulled away therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4611826
Abstract: A secure credit card formset which insures against customer credit identification falling into unauthorized with normally discarded formset portions is disclosed. The carbon paper slip is formed with a readily severable segment in the zone where the customer's credit card information is adapted to be imprinted. During manufacture, this segment is adhered to the bottom surface of the customer's transaction slip copy so that it is automatically handed in its entirety to the customer with his copy. No portion of the discarded formset stub and carbon paper slip contains the customer's credit card information.
