Vacuum and/or thermoforming the laminate to create a tray with an upstanding rim. Filling the tray with a food product (F). Providing a web of lid film (13), the lid film (13) being a gas barrier film comprising a multi-layer laminate comprising a heat sealable layer and a gas barrier layer. Heat sealing the lid film (13) to the gas barrier film of the tray around the periphery of the tray to create a hermetic seal between the two barrier films. Severing the pack from the webs of material.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a pack for holding a food item or items comprising a bag (10) and a channel shaped holder (11) for the bag formed in card and comprising a pair of side walls (12,15) to which the sides of the bag are adhered by adhesive areas (40) and a base (14) hinged at first fold lines (21) to the side walls and having a plurality of spaced second fold lines (22) extending parallel to the first fold lines to allow the base to take up a generally convex or concave shape with the side walls of the holder spaced apart and holding the side walls of the bag apart.

The method comprises the steps of feeding a web of flexible material past a succession of stations in which operations are carried out on the web including defining blanks for receptacles having walls and tabs by creating fold lines in the web, and then laminating a film of heat-sealable plastics materials to a face of the web of the flexible material. The film of heat-sealable plastics provides a heat-sealable surface on the web for bonding tabs of each blank together to form seams between adjacent walls whereby the blanks, when severed from the web, can be erected to form receptacles having openings to receive items to be packaged.
