Patent number: 4336944Abstract: An improved seal for sealing a shaft in a stuffing box is characterized by a pair of annular seal elements positionable coaxially end to end around the shaft in the stuffing box. One of the elements is sealed and fixed around its inner periphery with the shaft, and the other is sealed and fixed around its outer periphery with the stuffing box. Abutting ends of the seal elements have complimentary configurations, and are movable together into closely mating, sealed and slidable engagement. Thus, upon relative rotation of the shaft and stuffing box the one element is stationary relative to the shaft and the other relative to the stuffing box, the abutting ends of the elements slide across each other in sealed engagement, and the elements seal the shaft in the stuffing box.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1979Date of Patent: June 29, 1982Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.Inventor: W. Patent number: 4288058Abstract: A composite cylindrical mold for making rubber covered rolls comprises an outer rigid tube and an inner hollow cylindrical sleeve, with the space between the tube and the sleeve being filled with a cured elastomer. In preparing the mold, a heat shrinkable polytetrafluoroethylene tube etched on the outer surface is disposed around a rigid mandrel and heat shrunk thereon. The mandrel and sleeve are then inserted into the rigid tube in concentric relation. Curable rubber is then injected under pressure between the tube and the sleeve and the rubber is cured, causing the inner surface of the sleeve to conform exactly to the surface of the mandrel. The mandrel is then removed, and the inner surface of the sleeve is used as a molding surface for rubber covered rolls.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1979Date of Patent: September 8, 1981Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.Inventor: Hubert W. Patent number: 4131590Abstract: A superior friction material having high mechanical fatigue resistance and a stable dynamic coefficient of friction over a wide temperature range is prepared from an intimate mixture of an epoxy-rubber binder and friction modifying materials. The material is formed by mixing the uncured epoxy resin with the rubber and friction modifying materials, forming the mixture into the desired shape while soft and pliable, and then heat curing the mixture.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1977Date of Patent: December 26, 1978Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.Inventor: Michael P. Patent number: 4131661Abstract: Waste asbestos generated from a production process utilizing a surfactant as the dispersant and a coagulant as a solidifying agent is recovered for reprocessing by treating the waste with an inorganic acid to react with the precipitated surfactant and solubilize the precipitating ions. The precipitating ions are removed by washing. The insoluble residue, containing asbestos and the surfactant is mixed and reacted with an alkali to form a dispersion of asbestos that may be reprocessed by conventional methods.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1977Date of Patent: December 26, 1978Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.Inventors: Edward K. Patent number: 4126541Abstract: Apparatus for the refinement of colloidal asbestos dispersions comprises a horizontally disposed cylindrical tube having a plurality of closely spaced holes around the periphery thereof, a helical screw disposed within the tube, and a flanged jacket concentric with and spaced outwardly from the tube. A slurry of unrefined dispersion is continuously fed into the tube to fill it. Refined slurry is drawn through the holes by a suction pump connected to the jacket while contaminants are retained in the tube and moved by the screw to the outlet end of the tube where they are compacted and removed as sludge through a spring loaded discharge door.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1977Date of Patent: November 21, 1978Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.Inventor: John F. Patent number: 4098064Abstract: Process and apparatus are herein described for shearing and alternatively directing a continuously produced strand into or away from a strand collection device, particularly a pot spinning device. The novel apparatus is located between a strand producing unit and a collection unit and includes an elongate upright funnel with a transverse slide at the lower outlet of the funnel. The slide carries a straight tubular section and an angular tubular section, with a cut-off blade between the sections. The slide is reciprocated to bring either of the two sections into register with the outlet of the funnel, with the blade serving to sever the strand as the slide is moved to either position. When the staight section is in register, the strand enters the collection unit. When the angular section is in register, the strand is diverted away from the collection unit. The device is particularly used when operation of the collection unit is interrupted while allowing strand production to continue.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1976Date of Patent: July 4, 1978Assignees: Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc., Adriano Gardella S.p.A.Inventors: Claude A. Patent number: 3941635Abstract: A method is provided for sealing the end of a sleeved roll comprising a roll-shaped body and a tubular sleeve-shaped lamina formed of a thermoplastic synthetic resinous release material coaxially disposed about the body, the lamina having a heat-shrinkable end extending substantially beyond the body. A synthetic elastomeric sealant is applied between the lamina end and the body end, and the lamina end is then heat-shrunk to compress the lamina end about the sealant and the body end and to bondingly engage the sealant to the lamina end and the body end, thereby sealing the body end. Preferably the body has a bevel on its outer edge and the sealant is applied over both the body end and the bevel prior to heat shrinking.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1974Date of Patent: March 2, 1976Assignee: Raybestos-Manhattan Inc.Inventors: Charles L.
