Abstract: An assembly for forming a semi-permanent electrical connection between a pair of wires (1,2) comprises a male push-fit connector (3) and a female push-fit connector (4).Each connector (3,4) has a connection part to enable it to be connected to the wire, e.g. in the form of a crimp (5,6) and a mating part for engagement to the other connector. Each of the connectors has a sealing jacket (8,10) for sealing the connection to the associated wire, and one of the connectors has a heat-recoverable skirt (11) which, when the connectors are engaged, extends over part of the sealing jacket of the other connector to seal the connection against moisture ingress. The skirt (11) is provided with a layer of adhesive for forming the seal.

Abstract: This invention provides an enclosure for a butt splice of optical fibre cables which includes organizer trays for storing the excess lengths of individual optical fibers. The enclosure and trays provide for access to the individual fibers for splicing or repair.

Abstract: The invention relates to heat-recoverable covers which comprise embedded electrical resistance heaters, and to methods of covering an elongate object using such covers. In a preferred embodiment (FIG. 5), the cover comprises a heat-recoverable polymeric sheet (22) or fabric, provided with upstanding rails (24,25) as a first closure means. A heating element (36) is embedded in the sheet and arranged to follow a serpentine path such that each return loop portion 38 projects beyond the edges of the cover. The sheet is coated on its inner surface with a layer of adhesive and/or sealant (28,30). In use, the cover is wrapped around a substrate (32) at least once, and first and second closure means (24,25and 26,27) are engaged to hold the cover in the wrapped configuration. The cover is then heated to cause the cover to recover, and the adhesive and/or sealant to form a seal.

Abstract: A device for heating an article such as a heat-shrinkable sleeve (12) by means of a gas torch comprising an element (8) which is mounted on the torch and will deflect hot gases from the torch burner (7) and side arms (9) that are movable between two positions. In one position the article is heated substantially by radiation while in the other position it is heated principally by hot gases which have been produced by the burner and have been deflected by the element.

Abstract: A terminal for an electrical wire comprieses a terminal portion (1) for forming a disconnectable electrical connection to a corresponding terminal, a crimp portion (3) for forming a crimp to the conductor of the electrical wire, a neck (4) that connects the terminal to the crimp portion, and a plastics sleeve (7) located over the neck and crimp portion and extending beyond the end of the crimp portion. The neck (4) and the part of the sleeve (7) located over the neck together retain a quantity of sealant e.g. hot-melt adhesive 6 for preventing or reducing passage of moisture from the terminal portion to the crimp portion.

The recoverable material is arranged so that when it is heated by the element, it can recover and deform the element as aforesaid, in use to force the layer of bonding material against the object.

Abstract: A heat-recoverable wrap-around sleeve for pipe protection, with a patch-type closure.The patch is heat-stable and comprises two polymeric layers bonded together through, for example, an open mesh glass-fibre fabric. No separate adhesive is required.The hot modulus of one of the layers is low enough to enable it to bond to the overlapping edges of the wrap-around sleeve, and the hot modulus of the other layer is high enough to withstand installation temperature.This new patch is easier to install and requires less materials than prior art patches, and does not need to be bonded to the sleeve in such a distinct heating step.

Abstract: A sleeve, which finds particular application in the environmental sealing of joints between insulated pipes, comprises heat-recoverable polymeric sheet material provided at separate regions of a principle surface thereof with a layer of a heat-activatable adhesive for bonding the sheet to the pipe insulation, and a layer of a sealant to accommodate flexibility in the joint. A layer of a sealing material, having an elongation modulus greater than that of the sealant, overlies at least part of the sealant layer, to improve the pressure retention properties of the sleeve.
