  • Patent number: 4694350
Abstract: A data display video monitor includes an automatic kinescope bias (AKB) control system for the type wherein kinescope cathode output pulses representative of the black current level conducted by the kinescope are produced in response to energizing the kinescope grid during sensing intervals. As a result of this operation, plural horizontal lines along the top edge of the visible display screen area are illuminated. To reduce the visible effect of the illuminated lines, the AKB system is activated for short sensing intervals (e.g., two seconds or less) between considerably longer holding intervals (e.g., five minutes).

  • Patent number: 4694331
Abstract: A vertical transition processor for a comb filter detects the presence of a complementary-color vertical transition. A detector is provided for detecting if the color subcarrier on adjacent lines has the same phase angle and amplitude. This indicates the presence of a complementary-color vertical transition. If a complementary-color vertical transition is detected, then the comb filtered luminance and chrominance signals are selectively coupled to the luminance and chrominance processing channels so that the chrominance processing channel receives primarily color information and the color information is excluded from the luminance processing channel. This counteracts the adverse effects of the complementary-color vertical transition.

  • Patent number: 4693286
Abstract: A piston is forced in a direction to disengage from a cylinder containing a fluid such as an adhesive. The piston while in engagement with the cylinder abuts a stop in response to the disengagement force. While the disengagement force is kept on the piston, the chamber between the fluid and piston in the cylinder is evacuated. After evacuation, the disengagement force on the piston is gradually released and the piston is forced against the fluid to squeeze the fluid through fluid couplings into an array of corresponding containers releasably secured to the piston, simultaneously filling the containers without exposing the fluid to air.

  • Patent number: 4692992
Abstract: A method of forming a semiconductor device is disclosed wherein the doping concentration of the side wall of a trench isolation region is increased. An opening is formed in a first masking layer so as to expose a portion of the semiconductor substrate. Then, dopants are introduced through the opening in the masking layer so as to form a heavily doped region within the semiconductor substrate. An isolation trench is then formed in the exposed portion of the semiconductor substrate. At least a portion of the side wall of the trench is located in the heavily doped region. The heavily doped region increases the threshold voltage of the side wall transistor and thereby reduces the leakage current along the side wall of the trench isolation region.

  • Patent number: 4692852
Abstract: In a switching power supply for a video display apparatus, the primary winding of an isolation power transformer is coupled to a chopper switch and to an AC mains rectified output voltage source. A control circuit regulates the conduction of the chopper switch. A B+ voltage for a horizontal deflection circuit is generated from a first secondary winding electrically isolated from the primary winding. An audio supply voltage for a power audio circuit is generated from a second secondary winding also electrically isolated from the primary winding. A first feedback winding, more tightly coupled magnetically to the first secondary winding, and a second feedback winding, more tightly coupled to the second secondary winding, develop respective feedback voltages. The feedback voltages are proportionally summed and applied to the control circuit to vary the conduction of the chopper switch in a manner that regulates the secondary winding voltages and stabilizes raster width with audio loading changes.

  • Patent number: 4692889
Abstract: An arrangement is provided for computing the magnitude value of the vector sum of two quadrature-related component signals I and Q with a minimal of hardware. To this end, the magnitude values of the orthogonal I and Q signals are applied to a ROM as address codes to produce the Log.sub.B .vertline.I.vertline. and Log.sub.B .vertline.Q.vertline. values to the logarithmic base B. The smaller of the Log.sub.B .vertline.I.vertline. and Log.sub.B .vertline.Q.vertline. logarithmic values is subtracted from the larger of the logarithmic values to produce the absolute value .vertline.D.vertline. of the difference between the respective logarithmic values. The difference value D is applied to a ROM as an address code which is programmed to generate a correction value F=0.5 Log.sub.B (1+B.sup.-2.vertline.D.vertline.).

  • Patent number: 4691292
Abstract: A digital filter system in which the frequency spectrum of an input signal is divided into M consecutive subbands. Each subband is generated by multiplying the impulse reponse of a low pass filter by a sinusoid (sine or cosine) whose frequency is equal to the center frequency of its respective subband. The sinusoids of adjacent bands are phase shifted by 90.degree. relative to each other to establish a condition enabling aliasing components to be cancelled when the subbands are recombined.

  • Patent number: 4691189
Abstract: In a comparator circuit, first and second latchable circuits are connected in cascade between the output of an amplifying stage and the input of a decoder to enable the comparator to operate at significantly higher frequencies with lower error levels. An input signal, to be sampled, and a reference signal are applied to the input of the amplifying stage and a "sampled" signal indicative of the difference between the input and the reference is produced at the output of the amplifying stage. The "sampled" signal produced at the output of the amplifying stage is first processed, via the first latchable circuit operated in a regenerative mode to enhance the signal, during one time interval. The enhanced signal is then processed via the second latchable circuit operated in a regenerative mode tending to further enhance the signal, during a second, succeeding, time interval, for application to the decoder.

  • Patent number: 4691320
Abstract: Semiconductor devices such as lasers which include a substrate with a channel therein with a clad layer overlying the substrate and filling the channel exhibit irregularities such as terraces in the surface of the clad layer which are detrimental to device performance. These irregularities are substantially eliminated by forming the channel in a surface of a buffer layer greater than about 4 micrometers thick on the substrate and forming the clad layer over the buffer layer and the channel. CW lasers incorporating the principles of the invention exhibit the highest output power in a single spatial mode and maximum output power which have been observed to date.
