Patent number: 9687283Abstract: A method of implanting a supplemental fixation system in, a cancellous portion of a bone to supplement fixation of an orthopedic device located in the bone. At least one fixation structure is delivered through a lumen in the orthopedic device into the cancellous portion of the bone near a distal portion of the orthopedic device. A curable, flowable biomaterial is delivered to the cancellous portion of the bone into engagement with a portion of the fixation structure near the distal portion of the orthopedic device. The fixation system is releasably secured to, the orthopedic device to supplement fixation of the orthopedic device to the cancellous portion of the bone. The orthopedic device is detachable from the fixation system to facilitate subsequent removal of the orthopedic device from the cancellous portion of the bone without removing the fixation structure or the cured biomaterial from the bone.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2015Date of Patent: June 27, 2017Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventor: Karl Schwappach

Patent number: 8998925Abstract: A fixation system configured to releasably secure an orthopedic implant to a bone. The orthopedic implant has at least one lumen extending from a proximal portion to a distal portion configured to extend through cortical portions and into cancellous portions of the bone. The fixation system includes a flowable biomaterial that flows through the lumen into the cancellous portion of the bone in an expanded configuration with at least one dimension greater than a corresponding dimension on the orthopedic implant located generally along a pull-out direction of the orthopedic implant. An insert is positioned in the lumen and in engagement with the flowable biomaterial located in the cancellous portion of the bone, such that the orthopedic implant is detachable from the biomaterial in the cancellous portion of the bone to facilitate subsequent removal of the orthopedic implant from the bone.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2013Date of Patent: April 7, 2015Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventor: Karl Schwappach

Patent number: 8944886Abstract: An abrasive polishing slurry including abrasive particles in a carrier fluid and micro-nano members. A system and method for making an abrasive article using the polishing slurry is also disclosed. The system includes a gimballed dressing bar adapted to provide a compressive force sufficient to embed the abrasive particles into the substrate, wherein the members set a height the embedded abrasive particles protrude above the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2011Date of Patent: February 3, 2015Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventors: Karl G. Patent number: 8926411Abstract: An abrasive article for polishing a substrate surface. The abrasive article includes a holder pad assembly and an abrasive member held in place with respect to a holder pad. The abrasive member further includes a first surface engaged with the holder pad assembly, and a second surface including an abrasive. A preload mechanism is positioned to bias the second surfaces of the abrasive member toward the substrate surface. One or more fluid bearing features on the second surface of the abrasive member is configured to generate lift forces during relative motion between the abrasive article and the substrate surface.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2011Date of Patent: January 6, 2015Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventors: Karl G. Patent number: 8840447Abstract: An abrasive article for polishing a surface of a workpiece. The abrasive article includes a plurality of polishing islands arranged to interact with a workpiece to maintain a substantially constant contact area. Abrasive features are associated with at least some of the plurality of polishing islands. The abrasive features apply cutting forces to the work piece during motion of the abrasive article relative to the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2012Date of Patent: September 23, 2014Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventors: Karl Schwappach, Zine-Eddine Boutaghou

Patent number: 8801497Abstract: An abrasive article having an array of abrasive members with an elastomeric support that permits each abrasive member to move independently in at least pitch and roll. Each abrasive member maintains a fluid bearing (air is the typical fluid) with the substrate. The abrasive members are capable of selectively engaging with nanometer-scale and/or micrometer-scale height variations and micrometer-scale and/or millimeter-scale wavelengths of waviness, on the surfaces of substrates. The spacing and pitch of the abrasive members can be adjusted to follow the topography of the substrate to remove a generally uniform layer of material; to engage with the peaks on the substrate to remove target wavelengths of waviness; and/or to remove debris and contamination from the surface of the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2010Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: RDC Holdings, LLCInventors: Karl G.
