  • Patent number: 4326584
Abstract: A stripper seal protection and operating tool sealing element and method for protecting stripper seals during drilling operations with operating tools having both polygonal and circular cross sections. The stripper seal protection and operating tool sealing element includes a lower protective sleeve for expanding the stripper seal radially outward to prevent contact with polygonal operating tools and includes a head portion integral therewith for mounting an elastic sealing ring for packing off on the polygonal operating tool. The protective sealing element is particularly useful for applications in diverter housings of the rotating insert type. The protective and sealing element is inserted and removed from the diverter coupling concurrently with polygonal operating tools such as kellies. The protective sealing element also includes rotating lock means to provide common rotation of the rotating insert with the kelly.

  • Patent number: 4222590
Abstract: The present invention discloses method and apparatus for connecting together two members having mating surfaces by means of a plurality of fasteners such that equal compression forces are exerted on the members along force lines normal to a common plane. To accomplish the foregoing objectives, a plurality of pins are carried by one member and pass through bores in the opposite member. The pins are longitudinally extended simultaneously with a common internal extending force and stops are affixed to the ends extending through the second member snugly against the surface thereof. Upon release of the common extending force, all the pins attempt to restore to their original positions with equal restorative forces being equal and opposite to the common extending force applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 4135841
Abstract: A heave compensator is disclosed particularly adapted for use in compensating the flow through a riser pipe employed in offshore drilling apparatus for surges and ebbs produced in the flow therein by the rising and falling of the surface platform or vessel in relation to the ocean floor. A telescoping section substantially identical to that incorporated within the riser is carried by the floating platform or vessel at a location remote from the telescoping section of the riser. The compensating telescoping section is connected into the flow pipe on one end and closed at the opposite end. The two telescoping sections are disposed normal to the earth's surface whereby gravity tends to extend the compensating telescoping section. The two lower portions of the respective telescoping sections are interconnected by a flexible cable passing over a sheave carried by the platform or vessel.

  • Patent number: 4109712
Abstract: An improved safety apparatus for automatically sealing hydraulic lines within a sub-sea well casing when said casing is disconnected from an associated well head connector and Christmas tree assembly, has mandrel means associated with a well head connector assembly and valve means generally coaxially aligned within and to the casing means for controlling fluid flow through associated hydraulic lines, the valve means being moved into a valve-opened position by the mandrel means as the well head connector assembly is landed on the well casing head. Bias means associated with the valve means are provided for urging the valve means into a valve-closed position to seal the hydraulic lines when the mandrel means is withdrawn from the valve means. Hydraulic fluid flow is through passages through the mandrel, the valve means and associated portions of the well head connector and casing head, respectively.

  • Patent number: 3992889
Abstract: Improvements in flotation means for subsea well riser wherein the riser is run from a floating vessel and includes one or more buoyancy chambers open in the lower portions thereof to the sea and a gas injection line runs from the vessel to each of the chambers for injecting gas from a source thereof under pressure into each such chamber. The improvements include the provision of means for controlling the bleeding off of gas from within each of the chambers to reduce the buoyancy thereof thereby making the flotation of the riser completely adjustable. A check valve may be provided between the injection line and the chambers for limiting the introduction of gas into the chambers from the injection line until a predetermined pressure of the gas in the injection line is reached.

  • Patent number: 3984990
Abstract: Improvements in support means for well risers wherein the risers extend through a rotary table on a floating vessel down to a subsea well. A spider supports the upper end of the riser and hydraulically operated gimbal means support the spider with respect to the table to maintain a constant load on the riser. Inertia absorbing means is associated with the gimbal means so that, when sections or buoyancy chambers or the like are added to the riser and it is lowered down to the well, or vessel movement takes place, any off-center load that is acting on the spider that is not equally distributed, the inertia absorbing means absorbs such load and equally distributes it so as to maintain a constant load on the riser.

  • Patent number: 3955622
Abstract: Apparatus and method for orienting a pair of drill strings or the like in a predetermined manner in the center of a bore through a blowout preventer. The drill strings extend from a vessel floating on the surface of a body of water down through the preventer into a subsea wellhead installation. A first pair of opposed rams are actuated to move the drill strings into a predetermined central zone of the bore through the blowout preventer. These first rams operate under a predetermined maximum compressive force of the rams on the drill strings. Above this force, a second pair of opposed rams are activated to move the drill strings out of the predetermined central zone and into a final centrally oriented zone in the bore through the blowout preventer regardless of the position of the drill strings in the central zone.
