Patents Assigned to Reliance Universal, Inc.
  • Patent number: 4686108
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a conductive polymeric coating having a charge density of greater than about two which, after being applied to a nonconductive substrate, allows overcoating of that substrate by electrostatic spraying. Exemplary of the conductive polymeric coatings useful herein are those based upon quaternized homopolymers or copolymers of dimethyldiallylamine.

  • Patent number: 4656202
Abstract: This invention involves a unique wood and furniture coating composition comprising about 50 to about 85% by weight of an acrylated cellulosic, about 15 to about 45% by weight of an acrylated oligomer about 0.1 to about 10% by weight of a ultraviolet photoinitiator and sufficient solvent to render the resulting solution handleable under processing conditions. The resulting coating may be applied by a unique process that involves spraying the coating over a base coated wood substrate, flashing the solvent off, rubbing, sanding or otherwise processing the coating and then ultraviolet curing the coating by subjecting the coating to ultraviolet curing conditions. The resulting coating possesses excellent cured state film properties and good chemical resistance. Its film properties are at least equivalent to prior art cellulose nitrate coatings but it is far superior to these coatings in terms of its chemical and water resistance.

  • Patent number: 4524173
Abstract: An aqueous coating composition based on a highly stable emulsion of polymerized monomers curable in the presence of a strong acid catalyst at low temperatures and therefore usable on thermoplastic substrates. The emulsion includes non-functional monomers whose combined glass transition temperature is such as to give desired hardness and flexibility required of highly demanding product applications. Water miscibility and extended period stability of the emulsion is maintained in the presence of the strong acid catalyst by use of disclosed surfactant agents which are alkoxylated and/or etherified as needed to impart these characteristics. A high degree of solvent resistance is achieved by addition of a hydroxyl functionality to the emulsion for reaction with the crosslinking agent in the presence of the acid catalyst. The emulsion suitable for the coating composition is also set forth.

  • Patent number: 4521489
Abstract: A low temperature cure coating system exhibiting high performance characteristics, particularly solvent resistance and impact resistance, which is capable of being applied to either metal or plastic substrates. Dissimilar topcoat and basecoat compositions are employed, the topcoat being an aqueous polymeric dispersion, acid catalyzable for curing at temperatures of 150.degree. F. and below while the basecoat is selected for compatibility with the topcoat and the substrate, either the metal or plastic, to give proper adhesion, flexibility, film integrity and lack of interference with topcoat performance.

  • Patent number: 4517228
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for coating a fiber mat with a pigmented coating prior to subjecting the mat to heat and pressure treatment to form a composition board having a smooth, embossed or textured surface. The coating contains a mixture of an acrylic, hydroxyl or carboxyl functional vehicle, a melamine-based coating crosslinking agent for the vehicle, a high-melting wax, and a platelet form of talc. By employing this process, composition board products are obtained which have superior surfaces and surface finishes. In addition, these finishes inhibit composition board extractive migration which causes the formation of discolored spots on the finished composition board's surface.

  • Patent number: 4376807
Abstract: A substantial reduction of free excess formaldehyde in formaldehyde laden wood panels is achieved by coating at least one side of the panel with a salt solution containing an ammonium cation such as a 10-15% aqueous solution of ammonium bicarbonate. After coating, a barrier is placed over the coated surface such as by stacking a plurality of similarly coated panels with the barrier being maintained sufficiently long to allow ammonia gas generated from normal degradation of the ammonium salt to migrate to the free formaldehyde zone where the ammonia gas reacts with the formaldehyde to produce a stable, low volatility reaction product. The treatment may be applied to raw or finished panels and the generated ammonia gas reacts in the stacked panels with formaldehyde in both the glue lines and the formaldehyde based finish topcoating.

  • Patent number: 4344991
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for spraying water-borne emulsion topcoat finish materials with gloss and clarity equivalent to solvent-based topcoat materials irrespective of ambient conditions. One or more secondary water atomizing sprays are positioned laterally of the primary emulsion spray nozzle to lay down a mist layer underneath or on top or, preferably, both underneath and on top of the emulsion topcoat layer to retard premature coalescence of the emulsion particles thus permitting release of air bubbles entrained in the emulsion film during the spraying process. The water mist spray is preferably not intermingled with the emulsion spray in the space between the spray nozzles and finish surface but kept close enough to the emulsion spray to avoid significant coalescence of the emulsion film before the entrained air bubbles are released.
