  • Patent number: 8738668
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method for creating a non-redundant data set from a plurality of data sources. Generally, the system and method operate by creating unique hash keys corresponding to unique data files; compiling the hash keys along with seeking information for the corresponding data files; de-duplicating the hash keys; and retrieving/storing the data files corresponding to the de-duplicated hash keys. Thus, in accordance with the system and method of the present invention, a non-redundant data set can be created from a plurality of data sources. The system of the present invention can operate independently or in conjunction with any de-duplicating methods and systems. For example, a de-duplicating method and system can be used to read and obtain data from a variety of media, regardless of the application used to generate the backup media. The component parts of a file may be read from a medium, including content and metadata pertaining to a file.

  • Patent number: 8630984
Abstract: A method and system can be used to read and obtain data from messaging files regardless of the messaging environment used to generate the messaging files. The method and system can read part of a messaging file to identify the type of entry (e.g., email message, calendar item, address book entry, etc.) and access information on where information within the entry is located within the messaging file based on an identifying signature. The method and system can be used to obtain data from messaging files without having to recreate the messaging environment, including individual email accounts. The data can be stored in a target storage medium in a format that is more usable and more easily searched.

  • Patent number: 8615490
Abstract: First and second partial files are read from first and second storage media, respectively, irrespective of a sequence in which the first and second storage media were originally written relative to one another. The first partial file forms a first portion of a complete file. The second partial file forms a second portion of the complete file. The first and second partial files are combined to extract and form the complete file, without dependence on re-reading the first and second storage media.

  • Patent number: 8527468
Abstract: Disclosed are embodiments of a system and method for establishing and managing document retention policy in a distributed computing environment. One embodiment comprises the steps of loading documents into a database as individual components or items; establishing a custodian for each document instance; categorizing its content into a plurality of categories; assigning retention periods to the content by category; and continuously monitoring retention policies according to the assigned retention periods. Any database capable of storing de-duplicated data can be adapted to implement embodiments of the invention. One embodiment utilizes codified algorithms to cross-match one or more retention policies with each document instance in the system based on the role of the custodian held at the time the instance was created and retained and/or the content or category of the content to which the document refers. If multiple policies apply, the retention period is set to the furthest in the future.

  • Patent number: 8150827
Abstract: Methods for reviewing a collection of documents to identify relevant documents from the collection are provided. A search of the collection can be run based on query terms, to return a subset of responsive documents. A probability of relevancy can be determined for a document in the returned subset, and the document is removed from the subset if it does not reach a threshold probability of relevancy. Documents in a thread of a correspondence (for example, an e-mail) in the responsive documents subset can be added to the responsive documents subset. Further, an attachment to a document in the responsive documents subset can be added to the responsive documents subset. A statistical technique can be applied to determine whether remaining documents in the collection meet a predetermined acceptance level.
