Patent number: 5622046Abstract: Current state-of-the art injection methodologies for bipropellant engines ly on either impingement or turbulence to mix the fuel and oxidizer streams. The multiple impinging stream vortex injector combines both mixing schemes into a single injector. Both first stage mixing at point of impingement and second stage mixing or turbulent vortex mixing is accomplished by impinging momentum balanced, tangentially injected propellant streams onto one another. The impingement angles are calculated to yield a resultant stream vector that consists of only a tangential velocity component. The two stages of mixing results in increased engine performance and combustion efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1995Date of Patent: April 22, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Robert S. Patent number: 5620753Abstract: An optical fiber is releasably held in coil or skein form by a magnetized in film coating on the fiber. Adjacent convolutions are held together by a magnetic field to prevent unintended unravelling of the coil, but the fiber can be rapidly played out at high speed without rupture and with a constant release tension force. The magnetic field has a radial and axial component relative to the coil cylinder. A magnetizing apparatus is disclosed for magnetizing the film. A sensor feedback loop can dynamically adjust the reel-out drag force to dampen vibration modes during reel out which can cause tangle.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1996Date of Patent: April 15, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Sam DiVita, James C. Patent number: 5619205Abstract: An improved chaff in which a plurality of metallic or metallic coated elets are joined as chain links that, when deployed, produce microarcs when the link elements make and break contact with each other in an electromagnet field such as that created by a high power radar transmitter. These microarcs will then in turn create current spikes that will reflect a radar signal that has a wider bandwidth than conventional chaff, so as to make it more difficult to distinguish the chain link chaff from a fast moving target such as an aircraft.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1985Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Richard N. Patent number: 5617097Abstract: System and modifications are presented which allow existing artillery and rtar projectile proximity fuzes to have a near-surface burst (NSB) option enabling low height of bursts ranging between one and three meters. The additional circuitry needed to implement this NSB into an existing fuze is a single operational amplifier. The velocity of the fuze is calculated by the micro-controller counting the number of Doppler cycles over a pre-determined sample period of time. Thereafter, using the fuze velocity, the delay time needed for a NSB detonation is computed.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1995Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Stratis Gavnoudias

Patent number: 5617031Abstract: A buried pipe detection device based upon the principle of sensing of difences in the dielectric/conductive properties of the ground in the vicinity of the pipe is disclosed. Because the electrical properties of the ground directly over the buried pipe will differ from those of an area immediately adjacent to the pipe, the detection principle is embodied in a capacitor plate array that injects a low frequency sinusoidal signal into the ground and samples the injected signal from two spatially separated locations on the array. The capacitor plate array has two injector/sensor plates that form a capacitively coupled impedance bridge with the ground and a third plate to establish circuit ground. The injector/sensor plates sense changes in the ground path impedance directly beneath the plates as the array is moved along the ground. The outputs of the two sensor/injector plates are then combined differentially and are processed to provide a continuous analog or digital readout.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1996Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: John E. Patent number: 5616885Abstract: An apparatus is provided for selectively altering the jet pattern produced y a shaped charge round upon detonation by selectively providing confinement mass(es) on the surface of an outer casing of the round. Confinement mass(es) may be provided to induce a tamping effect upon detonation of the round. The placement of the confinement mass(es) relative to one another and to the round may produce different resulting jet patterns upon detonation. The mass(es) may be movable or removable such that the round may be configured to produce different jet patterns in the field or prior to targeting. Coherent or diffused jet patterns may be utilized, for example to penetrate armor of differing thicknesses or to alter the damage area created by the round.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1996Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: William Walters, Richard Summers

Patent number: 5611502Abstract: The disclosed innovative, interceptor seeker discriminator system has the capability to home in on targets containing nuclear materials by detecting the gamma fissions. The gamma signatures can be obtained from activating the nuclear material by a Neutral Particle Beam Weapon, or by detecting the natural fission emissions of the warhead. This system is innovative, in that the following properties are identified: 1) This system uses interactive discrimination techniques, which allows the gamma seeker to accurately home in on a true RV by comparing the return gamma emissions of objects. In this manner, the gamma seeker discriminator is expected to obtain substantially better discrimination K factor performance, when compared to using only IR techniques. 2) This system uses an interceptor/seeker to perform interactive discrimination and gamma sensors in conjunction with infrared sensors on the same interceptor platform (i.e., sensor fusion).Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: George R.
