Abstract: A refractory ring structure for forming a section of an inner wall or liner of a metallurgical vessel is provided. The refractory ring structure comprises a continuous top surface; a continuous bottom surface; a continuous arcuate inner surface extending from the top surface to the bottom surface and defining a cavity; a continuous arcuate outer surface opposite the inner surface and extending between the top surface and the bottom surface; and a continuous protrusion or a plurality of protrusions extending from the inner surface for lifting the ring structure. The refractory ring structure comprises a heat resistant, refractory material suitable for use in the inner wall of a metallurgical vessel. Also provided herein are a metallurgical vessel comprising a refractory ring structure as disclosed herein, and a method for providing or replacing all or a section of a refractory inner wall or liner of a metallurgical vessel.

Abstract: A jamb spray mix comprising: 0.1% to 10% phosphate by weight based on total weight of dry ingredients in the mix, 5% to 15% plasticizer by weight based on total weight of dry ingredients in the mix, the balance of dry ingredients including fused silica particles and impurities, and at least 20% water by weight based on total weight of the mix. In certain non-limiting embodiments, a coating of the jamb spray mix is applied to a refractory brick surface region in a coke oven using an air pressurized applicator and associated nozzle.

Abstract: A polyhedronal post terminal defining at least one polygonally-shaped cavity passing therethrough. The post terminal also defines at least one hole passing through one of the post terminal's outside wall surfaces, but does not pass through the post terminal outside wall surface which is aligned with and opposes the post terminal outside wall surface having the hole defined therein. The post terminal has at least one ledge portion protruding outwardly from its side wall surface.In one embodiment, the post terminal has a hook portion extending upwardly from its ledge portion. The hook portion is angularly oriented to the ledge portion's upper surface, and is laterally spaced from the terminal's side wall surface such that a channel is defined therebetween.In another embodiment, the post terminal has a claw portion extending downwardly from its ledge portion.

Abstract: The invention provides a construction block useful in the construction of coke oven combustion chamber assemblies. The construction block is a rectangularly-shaped unit comprises:(a) an upper and lower wall surface, wherein the construction block's upper wall surface comprises at least one ridge or groove running along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the construction block's upper wall surface, and wherein the construction block's lower wall surface comprises at least one ridge or groove running along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the construction block's lower wall surface,(b) a left and right side wall surface, and(c) two end wall surfaces, wherein at least one of the two end wall surfaces is offset along the longitudinal axis of said construction block's upper and lower wall surfaces to define one-half of a horizontally-oriented, L-shaped lap joint.

Abstract: A prefabricated structure and method for constructing and lifting the same is provided wherein the structure comprises: (a) a wall unit having a plurality of horizontal courses of construction material stacked one atop another and arranged such that they define at least one generally vertical passage therein which opens through the unit's bottom end; (b) lifting means, positioned on the unit's upper end, for lifting and transporting the unit; (c) generally vertically-oriented banding means, which is in contact with the passes under at least a portion of the unit's bottom end, for securing the lifting means to the unit; and (d) spacer means fitted within the opening defined in the unit's bottom end.

Abstract: A medium weight abrasion-resistant castable for use as a refractory lining having a bulk density of no greater than 130 lbs/cu ft, and abrasion loss of no greater than about 25 cc and a thermal conductivity of no greater than 5.5 BTU/hr/ft.sup.2 /in/.degree.F. includes a coarse aggregate of cordierite. The composition also includes an intermediate sized aggregate of calcined kaolin or calcined flint and a finer sized aggregate of calcined kaolin or calcined flint, fly ash cenospheres, clay, fume silica, and cement.

Abstract: A high temperature resistant refractory mortarless joint wall and method made from pre-formed, unburned plastic refractory blocks having siliceous clay, and from ten percent to seventy-five percent pyrophyllite, by weight, and workability from twenty percent to forty percent when erected before drying and firing.

Abstract: An end block adapted for use on a kiln car and for retaining a resilient refractory member which bridges between the kiln car and an adjacent kiln car includes a refractory body having a transverse recess. The recess includes an enlarged cavity and a neck portion connecting the enlarged cavity to the end face of the end block adjacent the end of the kiln car. The resilient refractory material bridges between the end blocks on adjacent kiln cars. One end of the resilient refractory material is retained by the recess in one end block and the other end extends into the recess in the end block on the adjacent car or contacts the end face of the end block on the adjacent car. The recess may be off center so that two layers of resilient refractory material may bridge between the two adjacent kiln cars.

Abstract: A semi-cordierite grog composition is made by forming a mixture comprising about 8 to about 20 weight percent olivine and about 80 to about 92 weight percent of a natural mineral selected from the group consisting of kaolin, bentonite, aluminum silicates, diaspore, quartz and mixtures thereof, wherein the kaolin comprises at least 75 weight percent of the natural mineral, and sintering the mixture at a temperature of about 1330.degree. C. to about 1390.degree. C.
