Abstract: Disclosed is a three-stage process for liquefying coal. In the process subdivided coal is slurried with a hydrogen-lean hydrogen-donor solvent and passed through a dissolving zone at a temperature in the range 400.degree.-480.degree. C. and at a space velocity in the range 2-150 hr..sup.-1 to substantially dissolve said coal. The effluent from the dissolver is stabilized with a hydrogen-rich hydrogen-donor solvent in a stabilization zone at a temperature in the range of 400.degree.-440.degree. C. and at a space velocity in the range 1-12 hr..sup.31 1 to partially hydrogenate the dissolved coal. A portion of the effluent from the stabilizer is recycled for use as hydrogen-lean hydrogen-donor solvent and the remainder is passed to a catalytic reaction stage operating under hydrocracking conditions to produce the net product and hydrogen-rich hydrogen-donor solvent.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for securing and releasing an underwater flexible line (30) within a channel (20) is disclosed. The channel (20) is formed on the support member (22) of an offshore structure such as the leg of a fixed offshore platform of the tension member of an offshore riser buoy system. The apparatus comprises a sled (22) which advances relative to the channel (20) on a track system. The sled (32) includes an aligning system for orienting and seating the line within the channel (20) as it advances along the length of the structure. Initially, the line is attached to the upper end of the offshore structure, preferably at or above the water surface and allowed to hang freely to the sea bed. Thus, the line is adjacent the channel and readily available for proper aligning and seating within the base of the channel. After the sled aligns and seats the line within the channel, it closes the channel securing the line by means of latches (34) pivotally mounted to one side of the channel.

Abstract: The polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone is achieved in high yield in the presence of a sodium-derived catalyst activator produced by the reaction of carbon dioxide with the sodium lactamate derived from the reaction of a sodium alkoxide and a 5-7 membered-ring lactam in an inert liquid nonsolvent.
Abstract: Disclosed is a lubricant composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein a particulate hydrated alkali metal borate and an effective amount oil soluble acid which stabilizes the composition against the adverse effects of water contamination.
Abstract: A method for steam stimulating a heavy oil reservoir which realizes significant energy savings is disclosed. Steam is injected into the reservoir via one well, permitted to soak and then produced back directly into the reservoir via a second well. This flowback steam production is terminated when wellhead pressures equalize, or when more than trace amounts of hydrocarbons are produced. Additional steam is injected into the reservoir via the second well, permitted to soak, and heated heavy oil is produced via both wells.
Abstract: Antioxidant additives for lubricating oil are prepared by combining water, an acidic molybdenum compound, a basic nitrogen compound complex and a sulfur source to form a sulfur- and molybdenum-containing composition.
Abstract: Poly-2-pyrrolidone compositions having improved thermal stability via the incorporation of an organic isocyanate or a thermal precursor thereof and methods of melt-extruding, and especially melt spinning such compositions.
Abstract: Antioxidant additives for lubricating oil are prepared by combining an acidic molybdenum compound and certain basic nitrogen compounds to form a molybdenum-containing compositions.
Abstract: A process for cracking hydrocarbons is disclosed in which catalyst particles are regenerated in two stages, the first employing an entrained bed of upwardly moving catalyst in cocurrent flow with regeneration gas, and the second employing a fluidized bed of catalyst in net downward movement countercurrent to regeneration gases.

Abstract: Disclosed is an improved method for the recovery and transportation of the chemical and energy value of light hydrocarbons. Light, normally gaseous hydrocarbons are converted to methanol and mixed with a viscous hydrocarbon for transport in a pipeline.
Abstract: Fungicidal oxadithiadiazapentalenes of the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R' are independently hydroxy or lower alkyl; R.sup.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each, independent of the other, hydrogen, halogen, alkenyl, hydroxy, hydroxyalkenyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkenyl, alkylthio, or haloalkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and from 1 to 4 halogen atoms or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together are alkylidiene, alkoxyalkenyl or together with the carbon atom to which they are joined form a cycloalkyl group; and R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are each independent of the other hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, haloalkyl, nitro, cyano, or dialkylamino. The compounds can be prepared by reacting sulfur chloride with the appropriate substituted N-cyanoalkylenecarboxyamide corresponding to the substituent desired at the 2-position of the compounds. The compounds are useful for controlling plant fungus; especially Grape Downy Mildew fungus and Tomato Late Blight fungus.
Abstract: A porous sulfur sorbent is disclosed which has principal use in desulfurizing reformer feedstreams. The sorbent is prepared by peptizing alumina with acid and mulling the peptized alumina with a copper compound to form an extrudable dough. The dough is extruded, dried and impregnated with additional copper. The resulting sorbent has a higher capacity for adsorbing sulfur compounds than conventional prior art materials.
