Abstract: Method of controlling fresh water mussels of the Dreissenidae family (zebra and quagga mussels) by direct contact with peracetic acid or indirectly by application to an environment where control is desired. The biofouling of environments, such as fresh water intakes, conduits and storage systems of power and water treatment systems, and of processing streams of industrial plants, is thereby reduced or eliminated.

Abstract: This invention describes a method for preparing water-insoluble biocompatible gels, films and sponges by reacting hyaluronic acid, or a salt thereof, with a carbodiimide in the absence of a nucleophile or a polyanionic polysaccharide. The water-insoluble gels, films and sponges of this invention may be used as surgical aids to prevent adhesions of body tissues and as drug delivery vehicles.

Abstract: There is provided a novel monoclonal antibody of the class IgG.sub.1 which reacts readily with both normal human and dog blood platelets while failing to react with thrombasthenic human platelets. This antibody has the property of completely blocking interaction of fibrinogen with platelets induced by ADP.

Abstract: Subsurface regions of an X-ray transparent but optically opaque object are targeted along a visible line of sight obtained by the use of two radiation sources (an X-ray and light beam source, preferably a laser). The central ray from the X-ray source and the light beam are aligned using a calibration fixture, one to the other and both with respect to structures internal to the object being imaged to provide the visible line of sight. The system (method and apparatus) may be used in surgical applications for selective illumination and sighting to reach specific subsurface members of a patients anatomy by guiding an incision.

Abstract: A syringe is provided which includes a sleeve for protecting against accidental needle stick. The syringe includes a cylindrical barrel including a pair of opposing openings, one of which is elongate to allow a cartridge to be loaded or removed therethrough. The sleeve includes a pair of corresponding openings which are registrable with the barrel openings when the sleeve is in the retracted position. The sleeve accordingly does not interfere with the normal cartridge loading and removal procedures. Once an injection has been completed, the sleeve may be moved to the extended position and the syringe needle can be safety recapped.
