Abstract: A system and method are provided for hands-free operation of a device based on a context of an event. An example system configured to practice the method can detect an event during playback of media content to a user, and optionally output a first audible indication of the event. Based on the event, the system can activate a speech recognition application using a custom speech recognition grammar for recognizing a set of speech commands associated with the event. Then the system can optionally output a second audible indication of readiness to process speech in association with the event. The system can monitor, for a predetermined duration of time after the second audible indication, audio input received via the microphone to recognize a command via the speech recognition application, and execute the command.

Abstract: A particular application is pre-associated with the detection of a predetermined stylus action that occurs while a given electronic device is in a standby mode of operation. Upon then detecting that predetermined stylus action these teachings provide for responsively opening that particular application. By one approach this opening of the particular application occurs in conjunction with switching the electronic device from the standby mode of operation to the active mode of operation. The pre-association can be based, at least in part, upon an automatic association based upon identifying the most-used application for the electronic device. As another example, the pre-association can be based, at least in part, upon a specific user-based selection.

Abstract: A control circuit stores profiles of stylus-input user preferences and pre-associates individual ones of those profiles with corresponding different applications. Upon opening one of those applications the control circuit then automatically uses the corresponding pre-associated stylus-input user preferences. So configured, a user's specific preferences regarding how the control circuit will render electronic ink on a display in response to stylus-based input are automatically utilized on an application-by-application basis without requiring the user to access and change global settings for stylus input.

Abstract: Access Panels for electronic devices are disclosed herein. An example electronic device disclosed herein includes a housing having an opening to access a card holder and an access panel coupled to the housing to cover the opening. The access panel slides and rotates relative to the housing when the access panel moves between an open position to allow access to the opening and a closed position to cover the opening. A first biasing element has a first end attached to the access panel and a second end attached to the housing and biases the access panel laterally relative to the housing. A second biasing element is coupled to the access panel to cause the access panel to rotate in a first rotational direction relative to the housing.

Abstract: A method, system and electronic device are provided for processing touch inputs on a touchscreen display. A starting touch input is detected on a document displayed at an initial scale on the touchscreen. If the starting touch input is within a disambiguation region for a number of interactive elements in the document, while contact is maintained on the display a further view of the document at an enlarged scale is displayed showing the area of the touch input. When an ending touch input is detected, one interactive element may be selected according to the location of the ending touch input, and an interaction function, such as requesting a resource hyperlinked by the selected interactive element, is automatically initiated.
Abstract: The present disclosure provides for an electronic device and method for displaying an image on a screen of the electronic device. In response to a stylus location input, a region of the screen is selected. A first part of the image associated with the selected region of the screen is determined, along with a second part of the image associated with the region of the screen outside of the selected region. In response to a stylus force input, the first part of the image is modified and displayed in the selected region of the screen. The second part of the image is displayed on the screen outside of the selected region. The modified image may be a magnified image, for example.

Abstract: A device and method for displaying a signal quality indicator representation on a mobile device is disclosed. Signal quality values for two different wireless networks is determined. The signal quality indicator is displayed in a banner area on a display of the mobile device providing a graphic representation displaying both of the signal quality values. One of the signal quality values is associated with a first color and the other value is associated with a second color. Where portions of the first signal quality values overlap, a combined representation associated with a third color is displayed. The signal quality indicator is at least one bar of a plurality of graduated bars.
Abstract: A user equipment receives, from a wireless access network node, a waiting time parameter indicating an amount of waiting time relating to provision, by the wireless access network node, of a solution for in-device coexistence (IDC) interference at the user equipment.
Abstract: Methods of encoding and decoding video, in particular chroma components, using filtered predictions, are described. An intra or inter predicted block is first filtered before being used to determine residual data at the encoder or to reconstruct chroma data at the decoder. The filtering tends to be low-pass filtering, which removes high-frequency components from the prediction block. The encoder signals the use of the filter to the decoder by including a filtered-prediction flag for each coding unit, or other region within a picture, that has been subject to prediction filtering. The syntax may provide that only coding units above a threshold size have an associated filtered-prediction flag; smaller coding units are governed by a filtered-prediction flag sent in connection with a higher node in the coding tree block.
Abstract: There is disclosed a method and device for operating an image database shared by a plurality of users. In an embodiment, each image captured by a user and stored in a shared image database is associating with the geographic coordinates of the location at which the image was captured. A search engine for the image database is configured to accept geographic coordinates as a search criterion for locating at least one captured image stored in the shared image database. The images having location coordinates within a predefined range of geographic coordinates is displayed to the user.

Abstract: A control circuit (comprising, for example, a part of a charging hub for a portable electronic communications device) that is not configured to support USB On-The-Go-compatible Host Negotiation Protocol is operably coupled to a USB-ID connector and is configured to transmit an identifier via that USB-ID connector to prompt a USB device in function mode to serve as a USB host. A locally-available power supply can then serve to provide power to that USB device notwithstanding the latter's role as the host.
