Abstract: Elastomer-based soft-robotic micro-tentacles capable of winding around and holding microscale objects and methods of fabricating same are provided. To realize the thin, highly deformable microtubes, a fabrication technique based on in situ thermal solidification of PDMS dip-coated around a cylindrical template and direct peeling of the cured structure is presented. This process is capable to asymmetrize the microtube's cross-sectional shape and enable the microtube to bend up to a single turn. To amplify the bending into a life-like, multi-turn spiraling motion, a semi-analytical model to shape-engineer the microtube and turn it into a micro-tentacle was produced. As a result, a hump is added to the microtube to enable the multi-turn spiraling motion.

Abstract: During movement control wherein a moving body tracks a user while in front of the user, a coordinate obtained from the torso of the user is used as the X coordinate of the position of the user, and among the position of the body of the user and the position of the feet of the user, the position which is closer to the moving body is used as the Y coordinate. Thus, the moving body is able to move to a target position in the left/right direction (the X coordinate) and the front/back direction (the Y coordinate) that is appropriate with respect to the user. Accordingly, the distance between the moving body and the user can be maintained appropriately, and movement control in front of the user and that is not an impediment to the user can be accomplished.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to allow for characterization of feeds, intermediate effluents, and/or products during lubricant base stock production. More generally, the systems and methods can allow for characterization of aromatics in various types of hydroprocessed intermediate effluents and/or products. In some aspects, the characterization can include measuring a fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectrum for a sample, and then generating a representation of the spectrum by fitting the measured spectrum to a linear combination of spectra corresponding to compounds or compound classes. As the hydroprocessing process continues, additional measured spectra and comparing the fit quality of the representation to the subsequently measured spectra. When the fit quality falls below a threshold value, the loss in fit quality indicates a change in the number and/or distribution of aromatics in the sample.
