Abstract: Machine-readable coded data disposed on or in a substrate. The coded data includes a plurality of layouts, each having n identical sub-layouts rotated 1/n revolutions apart about a center of rotation. Each layout encodes a first codeword formed from a sequence of n first symbols, each sub-layout defining the position of a respective one of the first symbols such that the first codeword is indicative of the orientation of the layout. In addition, each layout includes a number target features for enabling a preliminary location and rotation of the layout to be determined by a machine used to read the coded data, with at least some of the target features being shared by at least two of the layouts.

Abstract: Apparatus and process for fast, quantitative, non-contact topographic investigation of samples. Apparatus includes a light source, and a collimating concave mirror structured and arranged to produce a parallel beam and to direct the parallel beam to a sample to be investigated. A structured mask is located between the light source and the concave mirror, and an image sensor structured and arranged to receive a beam reflected from the sample and the concave mirror. Relative positions of the mask and the sensor to other elements of the apparatus are chosen to provide an essentially sharp image of the mask on the sensor. The instant abstract is neither intended to define the invention disclosed in this specification nor intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way.

Abstract: Machine-readable coded data disposed on or in a substrate. The coded data includes a layout having order n rotational symmetry, formed from n identical sub-layouts rotated 1/n revolutions apart about a center of rotation. The layout encodes a first codeword formed from a sequence of a multiple m of n first symbols, with each sub-layout defining respective positions for each of m first symbols, such that the m first symbols uniquely identify each sub-layout. Decoding the first symbols provided at one or more of the respective locations within each sub-layout is therefore indicative of the degree of rotation of the layout.

  • Publication number: 20040267679
Abstract: A cooperative solving method for controlling a plurality of constraint problem solvers identifies complexity criteria, which provide direction for selecting and for transitioning between constraint problem solvers. The method includes randomly selecting a test point and determining whether the test point satisfies a first complexity criterion. A first constraint problem solver is selected, and an alternate test point is identified by the first solver if the complexity criterion has not been satisfied. If the alternate test point is a problem solution, it is transmitted to the system. If the alternate test point is not a problem solution or if the original randomly-selected test point satisfies the complexity criterion, a second constraint solver selects a new test point. If the new test point is a problem solution, it is transmitted to the system; if the new test point is not a solution, the cooperative solver is restarted.

Abstract: The soporific activity of cis-9,10-octadecenoamide and other soporific fatty acid primary amides is neutralized by hydrolysis in the presence of fatty-acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). Hydrolysis of cis-9,10-octadecenoamide by FAAH leads to the formation of oleic acid, a compound without soporific activity. FAAH has be isolated and the gene encoding FAAH has been cloned, sequenced, and used to express recombinant FAAH. Inhibitors of FAAH are disclosed to block the hydrolase activity.
