Patent number: 6968741Abstract: A system for sensing respiratory pressure includes a portable pressure transducer configured to be carried by or proximate to a respiratory conduit, such as a breathing circuit or a nasal canula. The portable pressure transducer may removably couple with a pneumotach, in the form of an airway adapter, disposed along the respiratory conduit. The pneumotach may include two pressure ports positioned at opposite sides of an obstruction, which partially blocks flow through a primary conduit of the pneumotach. Corresponding sample conduits of the portable pressure transducer removably couple with the pressure ports. The pressure ports may have sealing elements which are configured to seal against piercing members of the sample conduits upon introduction of the piercing members therethrough. Upon removal of the piercing members, the sealing elements substantially reseal. Methods for using the system are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2003Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Assignee: Respironics, Inc.Inventors: Joseph A. Orr, Scott A. Kofoed, Kevin Durst

Patent number: 6955651Abstract: Methods for estimating the volume of the carbon dioxide stores of an individual's respiratory tract include determining a carbon dioxide store volume at which a correlation between corresponding signals of carbon dioxide elimination and an indicator of the content of carbon dioxide in blood of the individual is optimized. The estimate of the volume of carbon dioxide stores, which comprises a model of the respiratory tract, or lungs, of the individual, may be used as a transformation to improve the accuracy of one or both of the carbon dioxide elimination and carbon dioxide content signals. Transformation, or filtering, algorithms are also disclosed, as are systems in which the methods and algorithms may be used. The methods, algorithms, and systems may be used to accurately and noninvasively determine one or both of the pulmonary capillary blood flow and cardiac output of the individual.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Respironics, Inc.Inventors: Kai Kück, Joseph A. Patent number: 6952605Abstract: A patient contacting assembly comprising a patient contacting member that secures to the surface of a patient by means of an adhesive disposed between the patient contacting member and the patient. A channel is defined through the patient contacting member to enable a release fluid to be injected between the patient contacting member that the patient. Providing the release fluid between the patient contacting member and the patient at least partially reduces the bonding strength of the adhesive, making it easier to remove the patient contacting member from the patient and provides a pneumatic lift, urging the patient contacting member off of the surface of the patient.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2001Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Respironics, Inc.Inventor: Eugene N. Patent number: 6951546Abstract: A chest brace and method of using same that prevents the chest wall from buckling inwards during patient breathing by providing a distending force on the patient's thorax. The chest brace also restores the normal anterior-to-posterior chest dimensions by providing a distending force in this direction. The chest brace includes an anterior member adapted to overly a patient's chest. An adhesive mechanism secures the anterior member to a surface of such a patient. A support structure is coupled to the anterior member such that, in use, the support structure imparts a force on the anterior member in a manner so as to distend a thorax of such a patient.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2003Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignees: The Penn State Research Foundation, Respironics, IncInventors: Charles Palmer, Jerome Matula, Jr., Lance Busch, Eugene N. Patent number: 6920875Abstract: A ventilator supplies a plurality of volumes of fluid to a patient during a like plurality of inhalations by the patient. Each volume of fluid is supplied at an inspiratory positive airway pressure during a corresponding inhalation by the patient. A volume of fluid received by the patient is determined for each of the plurality of inhalations by the patient and an average volume of fluid received by the patient during each of the plurality of inhalations is determined. The average volume of fluid received by the patient during each inhalation is compared to a predetermined target volume and the inspiratory positive airway pressure each volume of fluid is supplied to the patient is adjusted as a function of the comparison.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2000Date of Patent: July 26, 2005Assignee: Respironics, Inc.Inventors: Peter D.
