  • Patent number: 6609999
Abstract: A perforation blade is used for cutting a perforated tear line in a bag to form an easy-open corner portion. The perforation blade includes a base formed to span the corner portion of the bag. The base has a first end adapted to extend to the end edge of the bag proximate a seal line, and a second end adapted to extend to one side edge of the bag. A series of closely spaced perforation teeth are formed with the base, and are adapted to penetrate the first and second walls of the bag to form a corresponding series of perforations at the corner portion of the bag. A starter tooth is formed at the first end of the base, and is adapted to cut a starter nick in a skirt of the bag between the end edge and the proximate seal line. A burst protection gap is formed between the starter tooth and a first of the series of perforation teeth. The burst protection gap is adapted for safely receiving the seal line of the bag to prevent severing the seal line when cutting the perforations.

  • Patent number: 6402379
Abstract: A bag includes first and second polyolefin walls with a thickness of between 3 and 12 mils. The bag has joined opposing side edges, opposing end edges, and at least one seal line proximate one of the end edges. The seal line extends laterally from one side edge to the other for sealing closed an end of the bag. The improvement in the bag is a perforated tear line defining an easy-open corner portion of the bag removable to form a pourer. The perforated tear line includes a vertical segment defined by a series of closely spaced perforations formed in the first and second walls of the bag and closer to one side edge of the bag than the other. The vertical segment extends in a straight path outwardly from the seal line and generally parallel to the closer side edge of the bag. An arcuate transition segment of perforations begins at an end of the vertical segment and extends in an arcuate path towards the closer side edge of the bag.

  • Patent number: 6299351
Abstract: A bag includes front and back panels having joined first and second opposing side edges, and opposing top and bottom end edges. An end edge seal line adjacent one of the top and bottom end edges extends laterally from one side of the bag to the other for sealably closing the adjacent end edge of the bag. The opposite end edge of the bag is open for receiving contents therein and is subsequently closed to retain the contents within the bag. The improvement in the bag includes a folded in-tuck formed along one of the first and second side edges of the bag. The in-tuck cooperates with the front and back panels to define a side gusset adapted for allowing expansion of the bag when filled. The in-tuck is sealed along the end edge seal line to form a multi-ply reinforced end portion of the bag. A handle is formed with the reinforced end portion of the bag to allow convenient handling of the bag when filled.

  • Patent number: 6231232
Abstract: A bag including first and second walls having joined first and second opposed side edges, a top end edge, a bottom end edge, and two spaced-apart seal lines adjacent the top end edge of the bag, the improvement defined of a tear-resistant, bag-supporting handle defined with the two spaced-apart seal lines. The handle includes a hand-insertion slit defined of a middle slit portion parallel to the top end edge and the bottom end edge of the bag and perpendicular to the side edges of the bag, and two arcuate end slit portions, a first end slit portion situated at a first end of the middle slit portion proximate to the first side edge of the bag and a second end slit portion situated at a second end of said middle slit portion proximate to the second side edge of the bag. The end slit portions each define an arc greater than or equal to 180 degrees and extend greater than or equal to 0 degrees and less than or equal to 45 degrees of arc below the middle slit portion toward the bottom end edge of the bag.
