Patent number: 6901374Abstract: A customer data capture system integrated with a dealership data management system allows customer and vehicle maintenance data to be exchanged between a kiosk on the floor of the dealership and the data management system. The customer inserts a customized card into a kiosk, and interacts with the pre-programmed software on the kiosk. The software recommends scheduled maintenance services and suggests potential coupon savings, based on the information received from the customer's card and the information stored in the data management system. A service order is generated and routed to the service department. As a result, the accuracy and speed of entering customer data are enhanced, while the dealership is able to offer value-added services at the point of sale, thus enhancing the dealership's business relationship with the customer.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2000Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: Reynolds & Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventor: Steven G. Patent number: 6879894Abstract: The invention provides a method and device for characterizing a vehicle's emissions. These systems feature the steps of generating a data set from the vehicle that includes at least one of the following: diagnostic trouble codes, status of a MIL, and data relating to I/M readiness flags; and then transferring the data set to a wireless appliance that features a microprocessor and a wireless transmitter in electrical contact with the microprocessor. The wireless appliance then transmits a data packet comprising the data set (or a version of the data set) with the wireless transmitter over an airlink to a wireless communications system. Here, ‘a version of the data set’ means a representation (e.g., a binary representation) of data in the data set, or data calculated or related to data in the data set.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2001Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Reynolds & Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Bruce Lightner, Matthew J. Patent number: 6868388Abstract: The present invention is a network operation center which centrally connects multiple external computer systems belonging to automobile dealers, manufacturers, and vendors of goods and services. The network operation center provides centralized network security, allowing the dealers, manufacturers, and vendors to access certain portions of each other's data while protecting other data. It further provides data translation so that incompatible data formats and structures may be shared. Dealers communicate through the network operation center with multiple manufacturers and vendors with a single network connection, reducing the need for multiple individual connections to each manufacturer. Network support and updating of system hardware and software is centrally performed. Dealers lease access to a network operation center and accompanying data connections, along with technical support, hardware, and software from a single service provider.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2000Date of Patent: March 15, 2005Assignee: Reynolds and Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Donald W. Patent number: 6732031Abstract: The invention features a method and apparatus for remotely characterizing a vehicle's performance. The method features the steps of: i) generating data representative of the vehicle's performance with at least one microcontroller disposed within the vehicle; ii) transferring the data through an OBD, OBD-II or equivalent electrical connector to a data collector/router that includes a microprocessor and an electrically connected wireless transmitter; iii) transmitting a data packet representing the data with the wireless transmitter over an airlink to a wireless communications system and then to a host computer; and iv) analyzing the data packet with the host computer to characterize the vehicle's performance.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2003Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: Reynolds and Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Bruce Lightner, Diego Botrego, Chuck Myers, Larkin Hill Lowrey

Publication number: 20040039646Abstract: In the disclosed automobile inventory system and methods, automobile report data is received from information sources having incompatible data formats. The report data is reformatted in a uniform format. A vehicle identification number (VIN) for the automobile is decoded to produce a set of automobile attributes. Attributes are matched with received third party automobile report data. A photograph is selected to represent the automobile. The color of the selected photograph substantially matches an identified color of the automobile. A database is populated with database data, including the reformatted report data, attribute matching data, and data associated with the colorized photograph. The database data is filtered or modified based on at least one dealer business rule, and the database data is electronically communicated to a World Wide Web accessible server. The database data is updated in real time.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 22, 2002Publication date: February 26, 2004Applicant: Reynolds and Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventor: Bruce Hacker

Patent number: 6647420Abstract: The present invention, sometimes called Enterlink, for the first time provides a federated system with state that interconnects applications of multiple companies. The Enterlink connects participant companies and applications, through the Enterlink bus, with each other and with consolidated data stores, third party services, core services, public process applications, and private process applications. The Enterlink bus uses, for the first time, metachannels, a metachannel engine and a metachannel repository. Connectors connect the Enterlink public process applications and the company private process applications with the bus. The invention can be applied to the automotive retail industry, among others. The Enterlink applications, core applications, and bus, may be operated as a service to company participants.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2001Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Reynolds and Reynolds Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Mark H.
