  • Patent number: 5180883
Abstract: To improve the combustion behavior of a two-part large-caliber ammunition round (10) composed of a primary charge (20) and a projectile charge (30), an annular transfer charge (29) is provided in the primary charge (20) underneath a charge casing cover (28) which terminated the primary charge toward the top. The projectile charge (30) is also provided with an annular transfer charge (39) above its propelling charge casing bottom (38). The transfer charge (29) disposed in the primary charge (20) results in rapid destruction of the charge casing cover (28) and of the casing bottom (38). The annular transfer charge (39) disposed in the projectile charge (30) improves the ignition of the tubular propellant (32) disposed in the projectile charge (30) and of the loose powder charge (36) without noticeable time delays relative to the primary charge (20).

  • Patent number: 5160999
Abstract: An acceleration resistant packaging for integrated circuits. Integrated circuits are usually packaged in plastic or ceramic housings. However, due to the great accelerations that occur, circuits packaged in that manner cannot be employed in projectiles. According to the invention each integrated circuit (5, 6) is arranged and between two thin sheets (1, 2) and the circumference of these sheets is clamped into a clamping frame (3, 4).

  • Patent number: 5161127
Abstract: A method is disclosed in which the direction and range of sound generating targets (2) is determined solely by means of passive sensors (10, 11). In this connection it is proposed to employ a seismic sensor (10) in addition to the acoustic sensors (11) customarily required for a bearing angle determination. In this case, a line characteristic of the signal source of the target (2) is measured in the airborne sound spectrum as well as in the solid-borne sound spectrum and the radial target velocity (V.sub.z,r) is determined from the Doppler shift of these lines and the propagation velocity (C) of the corresponding waves and, under consideration of the bearing angle (.alpha.), the target range (r) is calculated therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5159147
Abstract: For installation in confined areas, an externally driven automatic weapon includes an alternatable dual cartridge supply system having two supply chutes are disposed parallel to an axis of symmetry traversing a cartridge supply rotor and a control roller for the breech block drive. The internal guide surfaces of both chutes are formed by a central guide disposed on the axis of symmetry, with the maximum width of this central guide corresponding to the chord length of a segment of the rotor which is provided with three, symmetrically disposed recesses, so that the introduction of cartridges into the rotor from the linear cartridge chute can take place, for example, directly from the top. The supply of cartridges to the rotor is always effected during any given period of time from only one chute.

  • Patent number: 5153373
Abstract: A warhead including a shell which encloses the explosive charge and a projectile forming liner with the liner being disposed so that its circumferential surface lies against an intermediate ring which, in turn, is fastened to the shell. To avoid undefinable spalling effects in the region of the boundary surfaces between the liner and the shell, which could result in asymmetrical tail formation for the projectile produced by the detonative resharping of the liner, the intermediate ring and the liner have the same acoustic impedance.

  • Patent number: 5147971
Abstract: An obturating arrangement for a gun barrel of the type having a right-angled obturating ring having its axially extending arm disposed within a recess in the base ring at the end of the gun barrel and its inwardly radially extending arm engaging, in a known manner, a breechblock wedge insert. In known arrangements of this type powder residues generated during firing, which may accumulate in the recess of the base ring and become lodged underneath the supporting face of the obturating ring arm projecting into the recess, may cause the basic play between the obturating ring and the breechblock wedge insert to be reduced, so that malfunctions during the closing of the breechblock wedge may occur.

  • Patent number: 5140892
Abstract: An automatic cannon for a monergole liquid propellant which is designed as a continuously firing drum-type weapon whereby the supply of projectiles, the loading and the dosaging process take place in parallel. The weapon housing of the automatic cannon includes a drum which has a plurality of drum chambers and is disposed in a drum housing so that the drum chambers can be successively rotated into a firing position aligned with the gun barrel. Each drum chamber accommodates a respective projectile chamber and a respective differential piston arrangement for the liquid propellant. The drum is driven in a hybrid manner by a longitudinally displaceable slide, which in turn is driven in one direction by the firing gases supplied through a gas conduction arrangement and in the other direction by a linear electric motor.

  • Patent number: 5136949
Abstract: A system for remotely programming a mine includes a programming device comprising a computer having a data memory storing functions required to control the mine once laid, a code word memory and a random number generator. Stored data is displayed on an output device. A random number generator generates random numbers corresponding to respective addresses in data memory under which selected displayed functions are stored. The random numbers are stored as code words, together with corresponding data memory addresses, in the code word memory. A transmitter connected to the computer transmits the contents of the code word memory. A programmable electronic unit in the mine includes a receiver and a second computer. The second computer has a second code word memory for storing the transmitted code word memory, and a second data memory corresponding to the data memory of the programming device storing identical data.

  • Patent number: 5134922
Abstract: For a space saving and shock free breech block for an externally driven automatic weapon, a control roller 10 includes two camming discs which offset by 180.degree. with respect to one another in a symmetrical manner and arranged one behind the other, so as to continuously rotate in the same direction as the control roller. For the displacement of two locking bars disposed on opposite sides of the breech block 9 in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the breech block, respective slide members are arranged between the breech block guide path axis and the control roller 10. Each slide member grips around one of the camming discs by meane of a U-shaped pocket and transfers the transverse movement of the associated camming disc to an associated one of the locking bars for locking and unlocking breech block 9 in a form locking manner.

  • Patent number: 5133262
Abstract: A subcaliber projectile including a penetrator preferably made of tungsten eavy metal, and having a penetrator tip section and a section following thereafter and extending over the major portion of the penetrator length which is provided with an external thread (helical groove) or circumferential annular grooves to provide a form-locking connection with a discardable propelling cage sabot. To realize improved piercing power for the penetrator, the form-locking region is composed of annular grooves without a pitch, or of a fine metric thread having a thread valley, with a width of approximately one to three times the base width of the groove defining wall or of a thread peak. Preferably a more brittle material is employed in the front penetrator region than in the tail region, and a further indentation structure is incorporated in the first frontal thread turns or grooves of the form-locking region.

  • Patent number: 5133242
Abstract: An electromagnetic rail accelerator in which a plurality of plasma arc cushions are generated between a plurality of pairs of rails in order to accelerate projectiles. To prevent currents of different intensities from flowing through the individual plasma armatures and, thus subjecting the rails to relatively great wear, the number of rail pairs is made equal to the number of zones in which plasma arc cushions are formed. Preferably, the rail accelerator is composed of a rail arrangement in multiples of three, with the rails being disposed in or on the inner surface of a cylindrical tube of insulating material and with the current flowing in opposite directions in adjacent rails.

  • Patent number: 5133240
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for producing a large-caliber ammunition unit including a combustible or partially combustible propelling charge casing and compacted or partially compacted propelling charge powder, to increase internal ballistic performance. It is known to partially or completely compact or compress the propelling charge powder in a cartridge casing. However, such methods generally cannot be employed for ammunition including a combustible or at least partially combustible propelling charge casing because of the lower strength of the relatively thin-walled combustible casing material, as this would lead to deformation and/or to reduced loadability of such cartridges.
