A data repository can be used as transient storage while a phone call is ongoing (and possibly for some time afterwards). Data can be retrieved and stored in the data repository, as well as sent to external systems that a representative might use. A data interface can handle communications between the data repository and the external systems in a controlled manner so that exchanges of particular pieces of data can occur efficiently. A graphical user interface (GUI) can be provided for setting up rules for treating a call. The GUI can provide a convenient interface for specifying a mechanism for exchanging data with an external system.
