Publication number: 20030230160Abstract: A barend mounted twist shifter provides for ergonomic shifting and eventual brake actuation. The barend, which commonly provides an ergonomic hold on position for a bike rider's hands at the peripheral handlebar ends provides for an attaching location for the inventive twist shifter. Consequently, a bike rider may operate the bike's derailleur without taking his hands from the barends. A brake actuator may be combined with the twist shifter. The shifter's spool around which the shifter cable coils, may be positioned in the assembly adjacent the barend's tip. Its minimum diameter is substantially independent from the barend's outside diameter and may be reduced such that the actuation torque on the gripdrum may be lowered as well. The gripdrum and spool may be combined with a ratchet mechanism that may be easily integrated in the shifter's housing adjacent the barend's tip. A thumb perch serves as a release for down shifting.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 19, 2003Publication date: December 18, 2003Applicant: RITCHEY DESIGNS, INC.Inventor: Thomas W. Ritchey

Patent number: 6227072Abstract: A bicycle pedal is described that is more easy to engage and disengage and that has a hollowed out central section to prevent debris build-up. The bicycle pedal has a pedal body rotatably supported by a pedal shaft wherein the pedal body has planar pedal surfaces and a pivotable clamp member generally perpendicular to the surfaces of the pedal wherein the clamp member comprises a central contact surface and a clamp located at a lengthwise end of the clamp member. The clamp member extends out from a surface plane of the pedal for clamping to a cleat and the clamp also has a slideable guided surface acting in an arc-like way to perform a jaw-like movement. The bicycle pedal also has an urging device disposed against the clamp member such that it contacts a central contact surface of the clamp member and urges the clamp member inwards.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1998Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: Ritchey Designs, Inc.Inventors: Thomas W. Ritchey, Johannes Schneeberger

Patent number: 6067875Abstract: A handlebar mounted shifter system and method are provided in which the overall diameter of the shifter is reduced by providing, among other features, an integrated clamp and spring assembly. The shifter housing has a small diameter so that a rider may place his index finger comfortably on top of the housing so that the distance between the rider's hand and the brake actuator is reduced. In addition, the handlebar mounted shifter system may support and guide the shifting cable so that the shifter cable does not flex undesirably.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1998Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: Ritchey Designs, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Widdicombe Ritchey, Johannes Schneeberger
