  • Patent number: 4474340
Abstract: A steel measuring tape having a plastic casing with the tape coiled around a reel which encloses a recoiling spring. The tape projects through a slot at the bottom of the front wall of the casing, and is withdrawn in the standard manner against the action of the spring. A tape locking mechanism of unique design is positioned on the front face of the casing with a slide which is moved downwardly to lock the tape. An elongated locking strip has its bottom portion positioned directly above the tape, and is preset against the tape and clamps it against the bottom wall of the casing. Two unique mechanisms are disclosed for moving the locking strip to and from the locking position. Each of those mechanisms includes two angular arms which are engaged and elongated to move the locking slide downwardly into locking engagement with the tape.

  • Patent number: 4305206
Abstract: A loop for a tape measure consists of a one piece element having a loop portion and an integral tape connecting portion. The tape connecting portion has at least one pair of flexibly connected flaps which serve to secure the loop to the free end of a measuring tape. An integral "living" hinge connects the flap portions and the loop portion.

  • Patent number: 4288923
Abstract: A tape measure includes a housing having an opening and a measuring tape coiled therein including a free end having a hook member attached thereto. The free end of the tape extends through the opening in the housing and a braking lever is pivotally mounted to the housing with its front end adjacent the opening in position to engage the hook member when the tape is in a retracted position. The front end of the lever is normally biased into engagement with the tape, at the housing opening, by a spring, thereby to prevent movement of the tape. A pivot member for absorbing the shock of impact when the hook member engages the front end of the lever during retraction of the tape includes a pivot pin for pivotally mounting the lever to the housing and a shock absorbing element of a deformable, resilient material adjacent the pivot pin for absorbing the shock.

  • Patent number: 4171109
Abstract: A casing for a retractable type tape measure includes a coil spring secured to the rule of the tape measure. The casing has an outer shell and a central interior mounting structure for attachment to the inner end of the coil spring. The mounting structure comprises a specially constructed guide post for guiding the inner end of the coil spring in a smooth relatively large radius curve about the mounting structure to the first inner turn of the coil spring, thereby to avoid sharp bends in the spring and permit the use of unannealed spring steel to form the spring.

  • Patent number: 4056235
Abstract: A tape reel case, for containing a flexible metal tape measure or the like, includes a pair of substantially identical case elements or bezels, each of which consists of a peripheral wall having first and second edge portions and an inwardly extending wall portion integral with the second edge portion of the peripheral wall. The first edge portion of the peripheral wall has a tape discharge slot of predetermined length formed therein extending from its first edge portion toward the second edge portion thereof. This first edge portion of the wall also has a groove formed therein extending from a first end adjacent one end of the slot through approximately one half of the peripheral length of the wall to a second end portion approximately diametrically opposed from the slot.
