Abstract: Novel thiol-terminated hydroxyamides, and processes for their preparation and use are provided. These hydroxyamide compounds may be prepared by the reaction of a mercapto-functional alkyl ester, such as methylmercaptopropionate, with a molar excess of an alcohol-substituted amine, such as a b-hydroxyalkyl amine. The thiol-terminated hydroxyamides are useful as polymerization chain transfer agents, particularly when it is desirable to form polymers or oligomers containing functional hydroxyamide end groups. By chain terminating such polymers or oligomers with reactive hydroxyamide end groups the polymers or oligomers can be further reacted with acid-containing monomers or polymers to form block or graft copolymers.
Abstract: Copolymers of aliphatic monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and unsaturated monomers have been formed by gradually and simultaneously adding monomers and initiator, in the presence of a metal salt activator, to a reaction vessel initially containing water at a temperature suitable for polymerization. These copolymers have consistent compositions and superior properties as antiscalants, dispersants and incrustation inhibitors.

Abstract: Polymer particles in a size range between 2 and 15 micrometers, and having a refractive index close to, but not identical with, that of a matrix polymer and optionally having one or more enclosing shells, the outer shell being compatible with the matrix polymer, impart light-diffusing properties to the matrix polymer without degrading its physical properties, while the particles having a closer refractive index match to the matrix polymer impart gloss reduction to the surface of the matrix polymer.

Abstract: Higher yields of graft copolymer occur when a catalytic amount of base is present during the grafting reaction. The resulting blends of ungrafted polymer with higher graft-copolymer content exhibit improved toughness and clarity.
Abstract: This invention relates to chlorine-free machine dishwashing detergent compositions that provide cleaning as effective as conventional chlorine containing machine dishwashing compositions. More specifically, this invention relates to dishwashing detergent compositions containing copolymers formed from maleic acid, maleic anhydride, or salts thereof, and a copolymerizable hydrophobic monomer, oligomer or polymer, containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms. Another aspect of the invention is a chlorine-free machine dishwashing detergent containing low levels of, or no phosphate.

Abstract: Extended polymer compositions are provided which comprise polymers containing pendant functional groups of the formula: ##STR1## extended, i.e. admixed with a chalcogenide having the empirical formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 is a divalent organic radical at least 3 atoms in length, X is organoacyl or cyano, A is a chalcogen, each of R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 is independently selected from hydrogen, NR.sub.11 R.sub.12, NR.sub.13 and monovalent organic radicals, at least one of R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 being NR.sub.11 R.sub.12 or NR.sub.13, each of R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 is independently selected from hydrogen and monovalent organic radicals, and R.sub.13 is a divalent organic radical. These compositions can be extended with significant proportions of the described chalcogenides with corresponding reductions in polymer concentration without significant loss of physical properties. The resulting combinations are particularly useful as binders and coatings.
Abstract: A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to form a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a poolyolefin matrix.

Abstract: Wet adhesion, ICI viscosity, and scrub resistance of a paint are improved by incorporating into the paint a binder that comprises a film former and polymeric composition. The polymeric composition comprises either (a) about 15 to about 35 weight percent of substantially non-self-polymerizable monomer, about 30 to about 70 weight percent of a copolymerizable monomer whose homopolymer is water-soluble, and about 10 to about 35 weight percent of a wet adhesion promoting monomer, or (b) about 35 to about 65 weight percent of the substantially non-self-polymerizable monomer and about 35 to about 65 weight percent of the wet adhesion promoting monomer.
