  • Patent number: 5137571
Abstract: A method is provided for improving thickeners used in aqueous system. The improvement is directed to the elimination of organic cosolvents which are conventionally added to aqueous solutions of certain hydrophobic thickeners. This method involves the reversible complexation of cyclodextrin compounds with hydrophobic moieties on the thickener molecule to suppress the viscosity of the aqueous solution containing the thickener so that such the solution can be easily handled. This is followed by decomplexing the cyclodextrin from the thickener to permit the thickener to perform its intended function.

  • Patent number: 5135568
Abstract: A method is provided for improving the optical performance of fluorescent coatings. The appearance of fluorescent coatings is improved by the use of hollow polymer particles which scatter ultraviolet light and shorter wavelength visible light. These hollow polymer particles may be employed as an additive in a fluorescent coating, as an additive in a basecoat onto which a conventional fluorescent coating is applied, or as an additive in both the fluorescent coating and the basecoat onto which the fluorescent coating is applied.

  • Patent number: 5130369
Abstract: Functionalized polymeric compositions are prepared by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated functional monomer in a solvent including a reactive compound. The functional groups of the reactive compound and the functional monomer react during or subsequent to the polymerization of the functional monomer to provide functionalized polymeric composition. The reactive compound can be a hydroxy-terminated, poly(ethleneoxy)ated hydrophobe-bearing compound and the functional monomer can be a polymerizable carboxylated monomer, the functionalization in this case being a condensation. Removal of the water of condensation by azeotropic distillation drives the reaction to completion. The resulting high solids functionalized polymeric composition is soluble or dispersible in an appropriate solvent, and can be used as is, diluted with a solvent, or isolated.

  • Patent number: 5128410
Abstract: A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to from a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a polyolefin matrix.
