Abstract: A cushion with a support pad comprising a plurality of compressible suspension elements with a cover top and bottom joined together to form an impervious barrier, and a valve in fluid communication with the plurality of compressible suspension elements that allows the controlled expulsion of air until a user positioned on the cushion is optimally immersed in the cushion. When the user is removed from the cushion, the valve allows ingress of air into the cushion. In one aspect, the valve comprises an expansion valve controls air flow out of and into the cushion. In one aspect, the valve comprises a labyrinth seal that dampens air flow and pressure spikes. The valve comprises a pressure responsive compression spring that controls the expulsion of air from the cushion and, consequently, adjusting the immersion depth of the seated user.
Abstract: A resilient grid (10) for use with an inflatable cellular cushion (16) or mattress, the grid (10) comprising a plurality of openings (15), each opening (15) positioned and dimensioned to fit around a cell (20) of a cellular cushion (16) or mattress when the grid (10) is positioned on the base of the cushion or mattress. The grid can have an angled front support (23) side bolsters (26, 28). These components can be modular. The grid (10) provides stability and enhances positioning while providing temporary protection against bottoming out and provide airflow paths (22) among the cells.

Abstract: A support mechanism (20) for mounting a wheelchair back to a wheelchair post including at least one generally horizontally extending support pin (30), the support mechanism (20) comprising a hanger arm (24) having a downwardly opening hook (26) defining an upper support point and a self-locking latch (34) pivotally mounting to the hanger arm (24), the latch defining a locking notch (40) and a stop notch (42), the latch (34) being pivotal between a locked position in which the latch locking notch (40) and the hook (26) define a substantially closed hole around the support pin (30) and an unlocked position in which the pin (30) is seated in the stop notch (42) such that the latch (34) is secured open so the hanger arm hook (26) can be connected to or removed from the wheelchair post support pin (30); the latch (34) is shaped and weighted such that the latch can be moved to the locked position under the force of gravity.
Abstract: A motorcycle seat cushion comprising a base with an array of upstanding air cells across the base. In one aspect, the air cells are interconnected such that pressure is spread cross a wider area to reduce pressure points. There are external air flow pathways between the cells that allow air to circulate among the cells to disperse heat and moisture. There is a midline pathway that is positioned under the perineum and coccyx of the rider to provide pressure relief to the perineum, prostate and coccyx of the male rider. In one aspect, the cushion includes a cover having top and side walls of the cover constructed from a two-way stretch material. The cover has air vents that functionally align with at least some of the air flow pathways to promote the flow of ambient air into the air flow pathways.
Abstract: An adjustment apparatus (100) for a wheelchair back that can be used with various backs, that can be adjusted in a plurality of ways using a single adjustment point (104), and that can be adjusted without the use of tools. In another aspect, includes a support mechanism (200) for mounting an adjustment apparatus (100) for a wheelchair back that can be engaged using gravity, that provides at least one support point, and that can be utilized without the use of tools. Still another aspect of the wheelchair back assembly includes a mounting clamp (300) that is simple in construction, that provides at least one support point, and that can be easily disassembled and adjusted to accommodate upright frame members of various diameters without the use of a tool.

Abstract: A cushion or mattress comprising a base and a plurality of linearly aligned individual air cells across the base. Groups of individual air cells can be interconnected and in fluid cooperation with an inflation source, such as a pump. In one aspect of the invention, the inflation of adjacent cells is staggered, for example, in a checkerboard-like inflation pattern that helps diffuse load over a wider area.

Abstract: A supportive back rest for attachment to an original equipment back rest of a wheelchair to enhance the supportive characteristics of the wheelchair back rest. The supportive back rest includes a cushion, a suspension element and a cover. The cushion and one side of the suspension element are positioned in the cover. An opposed side of the suspension element is exposed and defines a space between it and the cushion. The suspension element slips over the upper edge of the original equipment back rest of the wheelchair to suspend the supportive back rest in position behind a seated user. The suspension element can be attached to the cover or can be attached to the cushion by molding or through attachment anchors.

Abstract: An attachment apparatus (20) for attachment to the air conduits (6,8,10,12) of a zoned air cell cushion A or mattress to an associated valve. The attachment apparatus comprises a connector assembly (24) with connectors (26, 28, 30, 32) secured in the ends (N1, N2, N3, N4) of air conduits secured in a conduit constraint (38). Each air conduit is in fluid communication with a separate inflation zone (r,s,t,u) of the cushion or mattress. The also connectors are in fluid cooperation with a valve (60) that places normally isolated zones into fluid communication and vice versa. The connector assembly may functions as a base for any one of a number of valves (60, 103, 150, 200, 400, 500).
