  • Publication number: 20120114884
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a component comprising a hollow axisymmetric body formed of a cured composite material is provided. The method includes the step of positioning the constituents of the composite material in a mould corresponding to at least a portion of the hollow axisymmetric body. The composite material is cured into a composite part, and residual stresses are generated in the composite material during the curing by controlling the temperature of the constituents in the mould. When the composite part is released from the mould, relaxation of the residual stresses causes one or more regions of the composite part to deflect in the radial direction of the hollow axisymmetric body, the position of greatest radial deflection of each region having a radial deflection which is at least 0.1% of the greatest diameter of the hollow axisymmetric body.

  • Publication number: 20120104847
Abstract: Distributed power generation systems generally include a number of power sources and electrical power loads interconnected by a distribution network. Electrical switches and fuses are provided such that local groups of power sources and power loads can be established. Should there be a degradation in the distribution network in terms of a set of criteria such as electrical frequency, current or voltage then the switch or fuse may be thrown to establish each local group as an island. By monitoring divergence from a set of criteria a method and controller may be utilised whereby the distribution network as a whole is considered and configured to establish virtual islands which operate prior to the establishment whether inadvertently or deliberately of actual islands within the distribution network.

  • Publication number: 20120107102
Abstract: An annulus filler is provided for mounting to a rotor disc of a gas turbine engine and for bridging the gap between two adjacent blades attached to the rotor disc. The annulus filler has a body portion defining an airflow surface for air being drawn through the engine. The annulus filler further has a front attachment formation connecting a forward end of the body portion to the rotor disc and which allows rotational movement of the body portion thereabout. The annulus filler further has a rear attachment formation connecting a rearward end of the body portion to the rotor disc. The rear attachment formation comprises a spring element which extends between the body portion and the rotor disc. The spring element expands under operational centrifugal loading such that the rearward end of the body portion moves radially outwardly with the body portion rotating about the front attachment formation.

  • Patent number: 8166762
Abstract: Fuel control arrangements provide and control fuel flow to injectors through fuel control valves. The injectors are connected to respective fuel control valves which in turn are connected to a first fuel flow path. The injectors are also connected to a second fuel flow path. The fuel paths are associated with a fuel source and generally have a recirculation valve between them. When flow in the flow path is stopped, recirculation of fuel can be provided across the recirculation valve to prevent fuel degradation. By provision of a restrictor valve in the second fuel flow path control of fuel recirculation can be achieved, as well as greater flexibility by presenting fuel flow separately through the second flow path to the injector whilst the first flow path is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 8169756
Abstract: An alternating current system 10 has a primary circuit 11 which forms a primary winding 18 on a core 16. A secondary winding 24 is connected with a current source 26 or, alternatively, with an impedance 60. The core 16 is threaded by a superconducting coil 20 having a current source 22. In normal use, current in the coil 20 provides a DC bias level of flux in the core 16, and the source 26 is varied to maintain substantially constant flux, thereby minimising losses in the primary circuit 11. In fault conditions, current in the coil 20 is reduced or removed to increase voltage losses across the coil 18, thereby limiting fault current. The impedance 60 can also be switched into circuit, creating further current limiting by virtue of the transformer effect of the windings 18, 24.

  • Publication number: 20120097645
Abstract: In a method for beam welding on components with a laser beam or electron beam generated by a beam source, the heat treatment of the welded component required to remove stresses is integrated into the welding process. In a work cycle combined with the welding process, a regulated heat supply to a selected region takes place, according to its residual heat resulting from the welding process and the predicted stresses in that region, using the residual heat remaining from the welding process following the welding process from the same or other beam source(s). The welding region is cooled in a controlled manner, so that welded components which are likely to be subject to high stress in use, provided for example for a aircraft engine, can be made available without inherent stresses and with the desired microstructure in a single—combined—work step.

  • Publication number: 20120096951
Abstract: A catcher pin assembly for attachment to a catcher link of an aircraft frame, the catcher pin assembly having an engine mounting element, a catcher pin, a compressible element, and a nut, which is lockable to the catcher pin, the compressible element being compressed between the pin and the mounting element and/or between the mounting element and the nut, in the assembled condition of the assembly, such that the compressible element applies a predetermined resistance to rotation of the catcher pin relative to the mounting element. The invention also relates to a method of testing a catcher pin assembly to determine if the catcher pin is carrying load from the catcher link, the method including applying a predetermined torque to the catcher pin sufficient to overcome the resistance to rotation of the catcher pin when it is unloaded, and determining whether the catcher pin rotates relative to the mounting element.

  • Patent number: 8162323
Abstract: A leaf seal arrangement is provided in which within a housing there are edge portions to inter associate with non parallel chamfer edges in leaf seal elements. In such circumstances, deflection of the leaf seal elements in an outward direction or inward direction relative to a rotating shaft creates variation in a control gap X, XX between the edges and the chamfer edge. Such increase or decrease in the control gap X, XX adjusts the aerodynamic radial force that is presented to the leaf seal elements whereby those elements can be more accurately maintained at a desired leaf position for optimizing leakage while achieving better wear resistance performance.

  • Patent number: 8161754
Abstract: Varying the fan nozzle flow area in a gas turbine engine allows adjustment of the bypass flow for varying operational conditions such as cruise and take off. However, care must be taken with regard to variation in order not to introduce drag or operational susceptibility to failure. By provision of a deformable member having a contiguous surface, which is deformed laterally from a splitter such as a pylon variation in flow area is achieved. A deformable member will be secured through seals to ensure a smooth surface. Actuation may be through a shape memory alloy material or provision of mechanical actuators to cause deformation of the contiguous surface.
