  • Publication number: 20200096130
Abstract: A linear actuator configured to axially move a plunger. The linear actuator includes a flux sleeve surrounded by a bobbin housing a wire coil. The flux sleeve defines an armature cavity extending along a movement axis, where a magnetic field is created within the flux sleeve when a current is applied to the wire coil. An armature is receivable within the armature cavity, where the magnetic field created within the flux sleeve acts upon the armature such that the armature moves along the movement axis based on the magnetic field, and where moving the armature moves the plunger. A liner is positioned within the armature cavity between the armature and the flux sleeve. The liner includes at least one of a polyamide and a polyimide.

  • Patent number: 7617700
Abstract: An improved heat exchanger, and flow control valve assembly associated with a heat exchanger, of the type wherein the temperature responsive flow control valve is integrated with the heat exchanger the valve assembly is well suited for mounting at the discharge port of the heat exchanger, without relying on rigid interaction with the inside wall of the discharge header or the tube ends in the discharge header. In this manner, the same basic valve assembly can be utilized in a variety of heat exchanger headers, merely by adapting the connection between the end of the valve assembly closest to the discharge port, and the housing or related structure of the heat exchanger at the discharge port. To the extent a relatively standard size valve assembly is to be used with heat exchangers having discharge conduits of different cross sectional area or shape, a baffle member can be placed around the valve assembly before insertion into the header.

  • Patent number: 7469841
Abstract: A self-contained thermal actuator positions the piston return member inside the actuator cup. The inventive configuration eliminates the guide and diaphragm seal that closed the open end of the wax filled cup in the typical thermal actuator configuration. The piston and an O-ring seal seated in an annular recess defined by the piston contain the thermally responsive wax. A return member within the cup and engaged between axially spaced, radially overlapping shoulders on the cup and piston biases the piston toward its pre-actuation position. The return member may be a spring or an elastomeric O-ring that also seals the thermal actuator against intrusion of contaminants from the use environment. The piston is closely received in the cup for guided axial reciprocation therein.

  • Patent number: 6988364
Abstract: A specially profiled wax retaining cup and piston guide are crimped together to compress a peripheral portion of a diaphragm wax seal to the extent of extruding the diaphragm material to form both an axial seal and at least one radial seal. The compressed, extruded diaphragm seal provides a wax containment seal capable of withstanding high wax pressures that generate high actuation forces. A wax filled thermal actuator reliably produces an actuating force F sufficient to lift a load in a range of 2500 to 6000 times the mass of the actuator. Performance of the thermal actuator may also be expressed in terms of the internal pressures generated and delivered to the bottom of the actuator piston. The pressure applied to the bottom of the actuator piston in the inventive actuator is in the range of approximately 1700 to 8800 psi (124 to 620 kg/cm2).

  • Patent number: 6772958
Abstract: A thermal flow control valve uses a cylindrical valve sleeve in a stepped bore to regulate fluid flow between an inlet and an outlet. A wax filled actuator is coupled to the valve sleeve to move the sleeve from an open position in which radial flow openings in the sleeve communicate with a larger diameter portion of the stepped bore to a closed position in which the radial flow openings are closed by a sleeve chamber closely surrounding the sleeve. A flow-through end cap closes one end of the stepped bore and provides an axially aligned fixed stop for the actuator piston. Two-way, three-way and mixing embodiments of the valve are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6439923
Abstract: A universal wiring harness that is capable of providing electrical connections to the various electrical components contained within a variety of vehicular automatic transmissions includes a plurality of electrical conductors that are supported on a relatively rigid support bracket that is shaped in accordance with the basic structure of the transmission such that the electrical conductors are generally directed toward the locations of the various electrical components. The electrical conductors are preferably covered with an electrical insulator that is formed from polytetraflouoroethylene because it provides enhanced resistance to degradation from chemical exposure, heat, penetration (such as from abrasion or cutting), and color fading. A plurality of terminals and connectors are connected to the ends of the electrical conductors so as to facilitate the connections to the various electrical components of the electronic control system.

  • Patent number: 6427538
Abstract: A variable support mechanism includes a plurality of pneumatic bladders and an electronic control system for controlling the inflation and deflation thereof. Each of the bladders communicates through a valve with a common manifold. The operations of the valves are individually controlled by a microprocessor. A pressure sensor communicates with the manifold and generates electrical signals that are representative of the magnitude of the fluid pressure in the manifold to the microprocessor. The microprocessor is also connected to a vent valve that provides selective fluid communication between the manifold and the atmosphere. The microprocessor is further connected to a pressure valve that provides selective fluid communication between the manifold and a pump. Initially, the magnitude of the pressure in each of the bladders is sampled, measured, and stored by the electronic control system.

  • Patent number: 5779178
Abstract: A retractor assembly for a seat belt system includes a magnetically actuated locking mechanism to selectively prevent extension of the seat belt. The retractor assembly includes a spring loaded spindle about which the seat belt may be wrapped and selectively extended. A ratchet wheel having a plurality of ratchet teeth is secured to the spindle for rotational movement therewith to control the rotation of the spindle and, thus, the extension of the belt from the retractor assembly. A locking mechanism is provided for controlling the rotation of the ratchet wheel for this purpose. The locking mechanism includes a pawl which is selectively movable between an engaged position, wherein rotation of the ratchet wheel in the extension direction is prevented, and a disengaged position, wherein rotation of the ratchet wheel in the belt extension direction is permitted. The locking mechanism further includes a magnetic actuator for controlling the movement of the pawl between the engaged and disengaged positions.
