Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and means for ammonia and/or ammonium transport in a variety of organisms, including mammals, yeast and plants. In particular, the present invention is related to the use of isolated polypeptide molecules, which are particular members of the aquaporin superfamily, and isolated nucleic acid molecule that encode such polypeptides in the transport of NH4+/NH3 across a membrane.
