Publication number: 20140285391Abstract: A dual band directional antenna with low frequency band reflectors that form desired antenna patterns in a low frequency band while remaining transparent to a higher frequency band. As a result of such frequency transparency, pattern changes in the lower frequency bands do not affect patterns in the higher band frequencies.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2014Publication date: September 25, 2014Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Bernard Baron, Chia-Ching Lin, Victor Shtrom

Publication number: 20140282951Abstract: Systems and methods for providing secured network access are provided. A user device located within range of a hotspot initiates a request sent via an open communication network associated with the hotspot. The request concerns secured network access at the hotspot by the user device. A unique pre-shared key is generated for the user device based on information in the received request and transmitted over the open communication network for display on a webpage accessible to the user device. The unique pre-shared key is stored in association with information regarding the user device. The user device may then use the unique pre-shared key in subsequent requests for secured network access.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 2, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Prashant Ranade, Ming-Jye Sheu

Patent number: 8824357Abstract: Systems and methods for improving data transmission rates in communication networks are disclosed. In an 802.11 wireless communication network, where a source node of the wireless network transmits TCP data to a destination node of the wireless network, the destination node does not transmit TCP acknowledgments (ACKs) for the TCP data if 802.11 ACKs indicate that the destination node received the TCP data. If a source outside the wireless network transmits TCP data to the destination node within the wireless network through an intermediate device, such as an access point, the destination node suppresses transmitting TCP ACKs. The intermediate device transmits TCP ACKs as proxy for the destination node to the source. The intermediate device also suppresses TCP ACKs where a source node within the wireless network sends the TCP data to a destination node outside of the wireless network.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2012Date of Patent: September 2, 2014Assignee: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: William S. Publication number: 20140225807Abstract: A mountable antenna element is constructed as an object from a single piece of material and can be configured to transmit and receive RF signals, achieve optimized impedance values, and operate in a concurrent dual-band system. The mountable antenna element may have one or more legs, an RF signal feed, and one or impedance matching elements. The legs and RF signal feed can be coupled to a circuit board. The impedance matching elements can be utilized to create a capacitance with a portion of the circuit board and thereby optimize impedance of the antenna element at a desired operating frequency. The mountable antenna includes features that enable it for use in concurrent dual band operation with the wireless device. Because the mountable antenna element can be installed without needing additional circuitry for matching impedance and can be constructed from a single piece of material, the antenna element provides for more efficient manufacturing.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 15, 2014Publication date: August 14, 2014Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Victor Shtrom, Bernard Baron

Patent number: 8792414Abstract: Mechanisms for wireless local area network coverage enhancement using dynamic antennas are provided. The dynamic antennas may be used, for example, in an antenna apparatus of an access point. The access point maps a plurality of virtual access points (VAPs), each VAP corresponding to at least one of a plurality of directional antenna patterns of the antenna apparatus. The processor transmits broadcast communication on each of the VAPs a further distance from the access point as compared to transmitting on an omnidirectional antenna pattern of the antenna apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2006Date of Patent: July 29, 2014Assignee: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventor: William Kish

Patent number: 8780760Abstract: Determining associations in wireless mesh networks are provided. In a mesh network that includes a wired border node and multiple wireless nodes, each wireless node advertises a backhaul throughput approximating the throughput between that wireless node and the wired border node. Using the advertised backhaul throughput information and the stored local throughput information, a receiving node determines a node association from among various candidate nodes.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2013Date of Patent: July 15, 2014Assignee: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventor: William S. Publication number: 20140133385Abstract: An apparatus for Internet-Protocol based communications in a wireless network includes a network interface, a controller, and memory. The interface receives a series of multicast data packets. The controller identifies one or more receiving nodes in the wireless network requesting data corresponding to the series of multicast data packets and determines that the effective unicast rate for one or more unicast data packets exceeds a minimum data rate of the series of multicast data packets using an 802.x protocol. The memory stores instructions that may be executable by a processor. Upon execution of the instructions by a processor, the received series of multicast data packets is converted into one or more unicast packets, the execution and conversion occurring in response to instructions received from the controller. A system for Internet-Protocol based communications in a wireless network implements such an apparatus in the context of an access point.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2014Publication date: May 15, 2014Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventor: William S. Patent number: 8723741Abstract: A device for a wireless RF link to a remote receiving device can radiate at different radiation patterns in response to detecting a change in the device position. As the device is moved, displaced, or re-positioned, a position sensor in the device detects the change in position and provides position information to a processor. The processor receives the position information from the position sensor, selects an antenna configuration and physical data rate based on the position information, and provides an RF signal associated with the selected antenna configuration through the antenna elements of the selected antenna configuration.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2012Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Victor Shtrom, Bernard Baron, William S. Publication number: 20140071879Abstract: An access point of a communications network receives a multicast or broadcast packet from a source. The access point converts the multicast or broadcast packet into a unicast packet addressed to a station associated with the access point. The access point then transmits the unicast packet over the communications network from the access point to the station. The access point further may determine a minimum data rate by which the access point may transmit the multicast or broadcast packet to the station and determines an effective unicast rate for transmitting the unicast packet to the station. If the effective unicast rate does not exceed the minimum data rate, the access point does not transmit the unicast packet to the station and transmits the multicast or broadcast packet.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2013Publication date: March 13, 2014Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: William S.
