    Abstract: To eliminate the effects of semiconductive sensor aging in the use of a semiconductive sensor for measuring the state variables of a gas in a system in which a pair of electrodes are embedded in an active semiconductive layer so that the conductivity of the semiconductive layer varies as a function of the state variable, a field electrode is provided and superimposed upon the measurement voltage, a voltage pulse is applied intermittently and the characteristic of the resulting current pulse is used to compensate for changes resulting from aging of the sensor.

    Abstract: Smeltable dust and pieces of grate slag in the proportions in which they are produced by a garbage incinerator can be disposed of by simultaneously melting them in a low-shaft electric furnace having at least one electrode extending into a molten slag bath which is maintained in the furnace covered by a layer of coke. The dust is introduced below the coke layer by a lance or tubular electrode while the pieces of grate slag are introduced above the molten slag both. The proportions of the two are maintained so that the leachate from the solidified slag when deposited in a landfill, conforms to the statutory requirements of clean drinking water laws.

    Abstract: Dust like substances which are recovered from a garbage or refuse incinerator are destroyed, eliminated or disposed of by smelting in a low shaft electric furnace having at least one electrode heating a slag melt therein. The dust is introduced into the melt by a lance opening beneath the melting surface and gas produced by the smelting process is subjected to cleaning. The slag may be continuously or discontinuously withdrawn and slag formers may be compensatorily added. A metal bath consisting predominantly of iron may be provided below the slag melt to protect metallic components of the dust upon the smelting thereof.

A device for recovery of low-temperature heat for local heating purposes has its optimum low-temperature thermal energy extraction when the heat recovery unit is shut down.

    Abstract: A device for relieving the pressure in a containment of a nuclear power station. The device includes a filter unit for filtering compressed air from the containment and discharging the air to the atmosphere. Radioactive substances entrained in the compressed air are removed. The filter unit includes an aerosol-filter subunit located within the containment, and a molecular-sieve subunit for iodine filtering located outside the containment in an auxiliary equipment building. Ducts and fittings connect the subunits of the filter unit. At least one duct extends through the containment wall and can be opened and closed by fittings which can be actuated in the event of a failure.

    Abstract: A high-output main power plant comprises a coal gasifier producing a combustible fuel gas at a large volume/time output rate, at least one gas turbine fed by the fuel gas from the coal gasifier and burning same at a volume/time rate smalle=r than the output rate to produce heat and mechanical energy, at least one steam turbine fed by the heat generated by the gas turbine, and an electrical generator driven by the steam turbine. A conduit conducts the continuously produced excess fuel gas from the main plant to a remote user where there is at least one satellite plant itself comprising a gas turbine fueled from the conduit by the excess fuel gas from said main plant and burning this excess fuel gas at a volume/time rate substantially smaller than the output rate to generate mechanical energy, and another electrical generator driven by the mechanical-energy output of the gas turbine in the satellite plant.
