Patent number: 6758123Abstract: A miter saw is provided having a support arm that is pivotally mounted to a base for adjustment of a pivot angle, the saw including a detent mechanism to provide pivot stops at common bevel angles, such as at 45° L, 0° (vertical), and 45° R. The detent mechanism includes a step-shaped, arcuate detent block mounted to the support arm in an adjustable manner to permit the accurate setting of the block in a home position. In an embodiment, a pair of set screws acts against opposite ends of the detent block, permitting precise adjustment in either direction. An axially movable detent pin is mounted to the base to contact against stepped surfaces of the block. The arm is free to pivot within a bevel angle range defined by one of the surfaces. Steps between surfaces act as a pivot stops, abutting the pin at a corresponding predetermined angle of the arm.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2002Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Assignee: S-B Power Tool CorporationInventors: Kenneth Svetlik, Mark Kuras, Abbas Javanshad, Yi-Te Liao, Chih-Young Huang

Patent number: 6753490Abstract: The present invention is for an ambidextrous lockout switch system for use with a power tool. With the system of the present invention in place, a multi-step process must be carried out before the power tool can be activated. The system is adapted for the process to be carried out with either a left or a right hand. The present invention includes a handle body having a switch trigger or lever blockable by a barrier. The barrier is movable with either a left of a right lockout button, with the right lockout button being operably linked to the left lockout button. The system includes also a spring, which is mechanically coupled to the barrier. The spring effectively restores the barrier to a position in which the barrier blocks actuation of the switch trigger or lever.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2002Date of Patent: June 22, 2004Assignee: S-B Power Tool CorporationInventors: Kenneth Svetlik, Peter Domeny

Patent number: 6727679Abstract: A DC—DC voltage converter that is capable of increasing as well as decreasing the voltage of a battery pack for application to a power tool or other load. The converter thereby enables different voltage batteries to be used with power tools that have motors that operate at different voltages. The voltage conversion is accomplished by using a relatively high speed switching circuit wherein the duty cycle of the switching circuitry varies the output voltage. An alternative embodiment utilizes feedback control circuitry to automatically adjust the duty cycle so that the speed of the motor, which is a function of the voltage applied to it, would be held generally constant.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2002Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: S-B Power Tool CorporationInventors: Illya Kovarik, Peter W. Patent number: 6680596Abstract: An electric motor having a regenerative braking capability is described which has several embodiments, each of which utilize two pairs of brushes, each pair of which has individual brushes positioned on diametrically opposite sides of the commutator. One pair is positioned for preferably optimally running the motor while the other pair of brushes is used solely for braking purposes. For normal motor or running operation, a motor switch assembly interacts with an activating mechanism to physically lift the pair of braking brushes from the surface of the commutator and also ensures that the running brushes come into contact with the commutator. When the motor switch assembly is switched to stop the motor, the switch assembly causes the activating mechanism to first lift the running brushes from the surface of the commutator and then place the braking brushes onto the commutator surface.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2002Date of Patent: January 20, 2004Assignee: S-B Power Tool CorporationInventor: John DeCicco
