  • Patent number: 6518114
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of forming an insulating zone (14) around an active zone (12) in a semiconductor substrate, which method includes the following steps: forming a groove around an active zone (12) in the substrate; and filling the groove with a first material so as to form around the active zone an insulating zone (14) which projects from the surface of the substrate and forms a vertical protrusion at its periphery; and blunting the angle of the protrusion of the insulating zone at the periphery at the active zone. The invention further relates to a semiconductor device formed using said method.

  • Publication number: 20030001217
Abstract: The invention relates to a high-voltage deep depletion transistor, provided in a semiconductor body (1) having a substrate (2) of a first conductivity type, for example the p-type, and a surface layer (3) of the opposite conductivity type, for example the n-type for an n-channel transistor. To prevent formation of inversion layers below the gate, the channel is subdivided into a plurality of sub-channel regions (7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) mutually separated by p-type regions (11a, 11b, 11c, 11d) which serve to remove generated holes. The p-type regions extend across the whole thickness of the channel and are contacted via the substrate. Each sub-channel region may be subdivided further by intermediate p-type regions (13) to improve the removal of holes.

  • Patent number: 6487534
Abstract: A distributed speech recognition system includes at least one client station and a server station connected via a network, such as Internet. The client station includes means for receiving the speech input signal from a user. A speech controller directs at least part of the speech input signal to a local speech recognizer. The, preferably limited, speech recognizer is capable of recognizing at least part of the speech input, for instance a spoken command for starting full recognition. In dependence on the outcome of the recognition, the speech controller selectively directs a part of the speech input signal via the network to the server station. The server station includes means for receiving the speech equivalent signal from the network and a large/huge vocabulary speech recognizer for recognizing the received speech equivalent signal.

  • Patent number: 6480666
Abstract: Real-time information is arranged according to a recording format for playing in standardized players. The information is subdivided into units and playback parameters for reproducing sequences of the units are included in the units. The format prescribes forward pointers to units that are located at a large distance from the unit which includes the forward pointers. However for home recording it is required that a recording is made in one pass, i.e. the video is to be recorded directly at its final location without a large buffer. So the device has a small buffer, and a processing unit for determining pointers to nearby units based on the buffer contents, while values for pointers pointing far forward are set arbitrarily, based on nearby units and/or default values indicating that the unit intended to be pointed to does not exist. Standard playback devices can still play the recorded material in trickplay modes with only minor deviations in the fast forward scanning speed.

  • Patent number: 6473560
Abstract: Recent copy-protection schemes for digital video copy-protection rely on a pixel-watermark together with the presence of a ‘ticket’ to implement the ‘copy-once’ state of content. This ticket is designed to entitle the owner of a disk/tape to making one copy of digital content. We disclose a method to pass along this ticket with the video signal after content has been converted to the analog domain. This form of the ticket is called the analog ticket. The analog signal may be recorded on a legacy device that does not comply with the copy-protection scheme (e.g. ordinary VCRs). The analog ticket is designed such that it is automatically removed in these legacy devices. Next generation copies by compliant devices are made impossible. Three possible ways of embedding the ticket signal into the analog video signal are proposed.

  • Patent number: 6459850
Abstract: When a program of a certain duration is converted into compressed data (encoded), it is desirable for the total number of data to fit in an available data space, for example, when recorded on an information carrier. More particularly in variable bit rate compression such as a video signal via MPEG-2, this is hard to forecast. For this purpose, a recording device includes a compression unit whose bit rate is influenced by a system controller via a control input during the encoding process depending on the remaining part of the vacant data space on the information carrier and the remaining duration of the program. When parameters that influence the bit rate are set in the compression unit, the system controller will take the complexity of the program derived during a previously encoded part of the program into account. Furthermore, a separate encoding device receives time information and data space information.

  • Patent number: 6460179
Abstract: Method and arrangements for transmitting and receiving menus, e.g. for accessing an electronic television programme guide. Each menu comprises a plurality of menu items which can be selected by a user. With each menu item, a subpicture can be associated. A subpicture is displayed when the cursor touches an associated menu item on screen. Thus, by moving the cursor over the screen, the subpicture dynamically changes so as to display a brief explanation of the menu items.

  • Publication number: 20020136300
Abstract: An information stream organized as a sequence of blocks is encoded according to a graceful degradation principle. The stream poses temporal non-uniform data processing requirements. In particular, with respect to a received block one or more blockwise defined control parameters and an associated blockwise processing load are detected (44). Under control (46) of a processing load for one or more previous blocks, one or more later blocks before processing thereof get an adjustment (48) of one or more of the control parameters. This lowers an expected load for the later block in case of an excessive load, and vice versa when detecting a sub-standard load.

  • Patent number: 6456969
Abstract: A method for recognizing a pattern that comprises a set of physical stimuli, said method comprising the steps of: providing a set of training observations and through applying a plurality of association models ascertaining various measuring values pj(k|x), j=1 . . . M, that each pertain to assigning a particular training observation to one or more associated pattern classes; setting up a log/linear association distribution by combining all association models of the plurality according to respective weight factors, and joining thereto a normalization quantity to produce a compound association distribution; optimizing said weight factors for thereby minimizing a detected error rate of the actual assigning to said compound distribution; recognizing target observations representing a target pattern with the help of said compound distribution.
