  • Patent number: 4033202
Abstract: An automatic electronic remote control system is provided which is particularly adapted to control the operation of clutches for a hydraulic torque converter in a vehicle. Responsive to operating conditions, the system produces different control signals depending on whether the ratio of the frequencies of two series of pulses is above or below a predetermined value, the pulse frequencies being related to the rotational speeds of the input and output axes of the converter. The system includes two n-bit binary ring counters which respectively receive the two series of pulses, one of the countersbeing effective to control the other so that a signal representing the actual value of the ratio in question is produced in binary form. This signal is decoded to produce the control signal referred to above.

  • Patent number: 4011775
Abstract: A transmission of the type having a rotating casing, a stationary housing and a chamber including a pump part, a guide part and a turbine part. Brakes are provided for connecting the guide part to the turbine for rotation therewith or to the stationary housing. Independent radial and axial bearings are provided between the said parts of the torque converter allowing radial displacement within the clearance of the radial bearing independent of the axial force on the axial bearing.

  • Patent number: 4010660
Abstract: A transmission having a double rotation torque converter and including a central assembly in which is mounted both a first brake for securing the torque converter guide ring against rotation and a second brake which cooperates with a planetary gear to cause rotation of the guide ring oppositely from the turbine ring of the torque converter. The two brakes and at least part of the planetary gear are mounted in the central assembly. The guide shaft extending axially from the guide ring is radially journalled in the central assembly. The transmission also includes a fluid communication system which, in cooperation with a pump, controls the mode of operation of the torque converter. The pump and most of the fluid system passageways may also be located within the central assembly. The torque converter may include a releasable torque transmitting member and the transmission may include further gearing stages downstream from the torque converter and the central assembly.

  • Patent number: 3964347
Abstract: A torque converter of the type having a rotating casing connectable to a driving source and forming a working chamber. In the casing is a pump part comprising a ring of pump blades, a reaction part comprising a ring of guide blades and a turbine part including at least one ring of turbine blades. The pump part is mounted to be selectively connected to the casing for rotation therewith or released from the casing to rotate freely relative thereto. The selectable connection between the pump part and the casing may be a friction coupling such as engaging conical friction surfaces or a friction disc coupling. The pump part itself may serve as a piston for engaging or disengaging the pump part with the casing. Movement of this pump part may also control a direct drive connection between the casing and the turbine shaft. A forward reverse gear and/or a synchromesh gear may be connected to the turbine shaft.

  • Patent number: 3944034
Abstract: The invention described in this specification relates to a hydrodynamic torque converter transmission of the type including two or more torque converter units connected in parallel between the input and output shafts and provided with means for interrupting the torque transfer through one or more of said units. One or more torque converters in the transmission is or are arranged with one bladed component thereof such as the pump or turbine blades selectively releasable from or engageable with an input shaft or an output shaft respectively whereby different driving conditions are obtained by engaging and disengaging the drive through different torque converters.

  • Patent number: 3940947
Abstract: A rotatable driving connection in which a plurality of abutments on one rotating part engage corresponding generally radial slots on the other rotating part with resilient material between each abutment and the contacting surfaces of its respective slot. The abutments are arranged in pairs of groups, the resultant of the forces of one group being perpendicular to the resultant of the other group. A leaf spring may be associated with each abutment to maintain contact between the resilient material and the walls of the slot and to prevent backlash. The area of contact between the resilient material and the walls of the slot varies in relation to the force transmitted by the connection.
