In a second embodiment a firearm safety mechanism for a revolver equipped with a cylinder incorporates a locking mechanism which inhibits cartridge from aligning with the firing mechanism and prevents the unauthorized removal of the cylinder. The locks include a selection structure preventing movement of the engagement structure from a locked position to an unlocked position upon receipt of predetermined selection criteria. The firearm can be locked against unauthorized use and unlocked by an authorized user without resort to external accessories.

An adaptor can be utilized to facilitate attachment of the lock to a variety of different guns. A preferred combination lock is disclosed with structure for altering the combination. An embodiment that is suitable for long arms is also disclosed. An adaptor plate can be provided with an lever which is moveable with operation of the lock to selectively engage a portion of the firearm to selectively permit or prevent operation of the firearm. Embodiments are disclosed where the lever is utilized to engage the drawbar of a firearm, the rebound slide of a firearm, or the hammer stirrup of the firearm.

    Abstract: A lock for a firearm is operable to engage and disengage a draw bar or trigger bar of the firearm, which connects the trigger to the hammer. The lock includes a lock member which, in the locked position, operatively engages the draw bar to move the draw bar out of engagement with the hammer. The firearm is thereby rendered inoperative. The lock member, in the unlocked position, permits the draw bar to engage the hammer in the usual manner to permit operation of the firearm. The lock member can be provided as part of a lock assembly which can be readily installed in the firearm, and in a construction which is resistant to tampering.

The engagement structure has a locked position in which the engagement structure operatively engages a portion of the firing mechanism to prevent discharge of the firearm. The lock includes at least one push button adapted to disengage the lock and permit movement of the engagement structure from the locked position to the unlocked position upon the reception of a predetermined selection criteria. Method and apparatus for attaching this and other safety locks to firearms, particularly revolvers, is also disclosed. The firearm can be locked against unauthorized use and unlocked by an authorized user without resort to exterior accessories.
