Patents Assigned to Saint-Gobain Recherche
  • Patent number: 4728678
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the grafting of unsaturated monomers to the surface of glass substrates. The process comprises applying to the glass substrates a solution comprising a silane having a double ethylene bond, contacting the products thus coated with an atmosphere formed by a mixture of ozone and oxygen, and placing these coated products in contact with an unsaturated organic monomer. The monomer may be added in the form of a solution, an emulsion or a suspension. The products thus obtained may have a number of technical applications.

  • Patent number: 4726996
Abstract: A phenolic resin based laminate material which can be cross-linked by acid catalysis, endowed with a reinforcement, comprising at least two surfaces and having on at least one of its two surfaces at least one additional nonphenolic resin-based layer is disclosed. In accordance with the invention, the additional layer in contact with the phenolic resin is obtained from a formula comprising an unsaturated polyester resin, a cross-linking solvent of said resin, possibly one or several other additives, at least one of the main components having a formula comprising hydrophilic centers in a number at least equal to the number of non-saturation centers in the polymeric chain of the resin.

  • Patent number: 4619681
Abstract: The invention relates to the measurement of stresses in float glass. In a process, the stresses in the glass are continuously determined by scanning the glass over its entire width and simultaneously measuring the temperature of the glass at each location scanned. A measurement of double refraction representing stresses is combined with the temperature measurement to establish values of the permanent stresses in the glass. The invention includes apparatus for carrying out the process.

  • Patent number: 4607372
Abstract: An electric fusion furnace for a vitrifiable charge wherein the fusion energy of the furnace is dissipated by the Joule effect in the molten mass, comprising a furnace having electrodes vertically disposed therein which are attached to the bottom of the hearth of the furnace and which are distributed regularly over the entire surface of the hearth in at least one ordered grouping of two rows with each row comprised of three equidistant electrodes powered in three respective phases designated as R, S, and T, wherewith the order of the phases in the two rows is inverted (R, S, T, and T, S, R), such that the two middle electrodes are in phase and the pairs of electrodes on the respective ends are in different phases, and wherewith the interelectrode distance in a given row is approximately equal to the distance between the two rows.

  • Patent number: 4578102
Abstract: The invention relates to thermal quenching or tempering of glass by means of a gaseous jet directed by nozzles.According to the inventive method, the nozzles are supplied with gas and liquid under a pressure which enables the jet velocity attained at the exit of the nozzles to be at least sonic, said jet being comprised of a mixture of a gas and a finely divided liquid. In particular the gas may be air and the liquid water. The invention may be applied to vertical or horizontal quenching or tempering of sheets or other items of glass.
