Patent number: 6624548Abstract: The present invention comprises a microelectromechanical positioner to achieve substantially translational positioning of a platform without rotational motion, thereby maintaining a constant angular orientation of the platform during movement. A linkage mechanism of the positioner can comprise parallelogram linkages to constrain the rotational motion of the platform. Such linkages further can comprise flexural hinges or other turning joints at the linkage pivots to eliminate the need for rubbing surfaces. A plurality of the linkage mechanisms can be used to enable translational motion of the platform with two degrees of freedom. A variety of means can be used to actuate the positioner. Independent actuation of the anchor links of the linkage mechanisms with rotary electrostatic actuators can be used to provide controlled translational movement of the platform.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Samuel Lee Miller, Murray Steven Rodgers

Patent number: 6615496Abstract: A cutting blade is disclosed fabricated of micromachined silicon. The cutting blade utilizes a monocrystalline silicon substrate having a {211} crystalline orientation to form one or more cutting edges that are defined by the intersection of {211} crystalline planes of silicon with {111} crystalline planes of silicon. This results in a cutting blade which has a shallow cutting-edge angle &thgr; of 19.5°. The micromachined cutting blade can be formed using an anisotropic wet etching process which substantially terminates etching upon reaching the {111} crystalline planes of silicon. This allows multiple blades to be batch fabricated on a common substrate and separated for packaging and use. The micromachined cutting blade, which can be mounted to a handle in tension and optionally coated for increased wear resistance and biocompatibility, has multiple applications including eye surgery (LASIK procedure).Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2000Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: James G. Patent number: 6618712Abstract: The present invention provides a method of quickly identifying bioaerosols by class, even if the subject bioaerosol has not been previously encountered. The method begins by collecting laser ablation mass spectra from known particles. The spectra are correlated with the known particles, including the species of particle and the classification (e.g., bacteria). The spectra can then be used to train a neural network, for example using genetic algorithm-based training, to recognize each spectra and to recognize characteristics of the classifications. The spectra can also be used in a multivariate patch algorithm. Laser ablation mass specta from unknown particles can be presented as inputs to the trained neural net for identification as to classification. The description below first describes suitable intelligent algorithms and multivariate patch algorithms, then presents an example of the present invention including results.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1999Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Eric P. Patent number: 6610369Abstract: The cylinder walls of light metal engine blocks are thermally spray coated with a ferrous-based coating using an HVOF device. A ferrous-based wire is fed to the HVOF device to locate a tip end of the wire in a high temperature zone of the device. Jet flows of oxygen and gaseous fuel are fed to the high temperature zone and are combusted to generate heat to melt the tip end. The oxygen is oversupplied in relation to the gaseous fuel. The excess oxygen reacts with and burns a fraction of the ferrous-based feed wire in an exothermic reaction to generate substantial supplemental heat to the HVOF device. The molten/combusted metal is sprayed by the device onto the walls of the cylinder by the jet flow of gases.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignees: General Motors Corporation, Sandia National LaboratoriesInventors: Larry Edward Byrnes, Martin Stephen Kramer, Richard A. Patent number: 6605339Abstract: A highly effective, micron-scale micro heat barrier structure and process for manufacturing a micro heat barrier based on semiconductor and/or MEMS fabrication techniques. The micro heat barrier has an array of non-metallic, freestanding microsupports with a height less than 100 microns, attached to a substrate. An infrared reflective membrane (e.g., 1 micron gold) can be supported by the array of microsupports to provide radiation shielding. The micro heat barrier can be evacuated to eliminate gas phase heat conduction and convection. Semi-isotropic, reactive ion plasma etching can be used to create a microspike having a cusp-like shape with a sharp, pointed tip (<0.1 micron), to minimize the tip's contact area. A heat source can be placed directly on the microspikes. The micro heat barrier can have an apparent thermal conductivity in the range of 10−6 to 10−7 W/m-K. Multiple layers of reflective membranes can be used to increase thermal resistance.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2001Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Albert C. Patent number: 6604406Abstract: A preconcentrator system and apparatus suited to human portable use wherein sample potentially containing a target chemical substance is drawn into a chamber and through a pervious screen. The screen is adapted to capture target chemicals and then, upon heating, to release those chemicals into the chamber. Chemicals captured and then released in this fashion are then carried to a portable chemical detection device such as a portable ion mobility spectrometer. In the preferred embodiment, the means for drawing sample into the chamber comprises a reversible fan which, when operated in reverse direction, creates a backpressure that facilitates evolution of captured target chemicals into the chamber when the screen is heated. The screen can be positioned directly in front of the detector prior to heating to improve detection capability.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2001Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Kevin L. Patent number: 6593381Abstract: A method for providing a uniformly dense polymer foam body having a density between about 0.013 g/cm3 to about 0.5 g/cm3 is disclosed. Patent number: 6592835Abstract: A method is disclosed for forming an inclusion-free silica substrate using a monocrystalline silicon substrate as the starting material and oxidizing the silicon substrate to convert it entirely to silica. The oxidation process is performed from both major surfaces of the silicon substrate using a conventional high-pressure oxidation system. The resulting product is an amorphous silica substrate which is expected to have superior etching characteristics for microfabrication than conventional fused silica substrates. The present invention can also be used to convert only a portion of a monocrystalline silicon substrate to silica by masking the silicon substrate and locally thinning a portion the silicon substrate prior to converting the silicon portion entirely to silica. In this case, the silica formed by oxidizing the thinned portion of the silicon substrate can be used, for example, as a window to provide optical access through the silicon substrate.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Carolyn M.
