  • Patent number: 5531620
Abstract: Two embodiments of exhaust systems for small watercraft that include cooling jackets circling a portion of the exhaust conduit. At least a portion of the water from the cooling jacket is mixed with the exhaust gases but at a point spaced substantially downstream of the cooling jacket so as to reduce the likelihood of water entering the engine through the exhaust system. In one embodiment, an additional cooling jacket is provided to which the coolant from the first cooling jacket is introduced and then discharged into the exhaust conduit. The second cooling jacket is disposed substantially downstream of the first cooling jacket.

  • Patent number: 5501202
Abstract: An engine of an outboard motor includes an improved engine component layout to minimize the size of the engine and to improve the performance of the components. A separator of a crankcase ventilation system is located on a cam cover outside the cam chamber in order to reduce the size of the cam cover while providing the necessary spacing between the separator and the valve mechanism within the cam chamber. A fuel pump is positioned at about the center of the cam cover, beneath the separator, to generally balance the length of fuel travel to each of the carburetors. A fuel filter also is located on the cam cover, beneath the fuel filter, to generally isolate the fuel filter from the effects of the heated cylinder head and block. The arrangement of these components does not interfere with the hinge-like travel of a top cowling, which surrounds the engine, relative to a lower tray.

  • Patent number: 5318466
Abstract: A remote-control device incorporates a remote-control lever for the shifting and throttle operations of a marine propulsion unit. A shift range exists in the central region of lever movement where only shift operations can take place, and once the remote-control lever has passed through the above mentioned specific movement range, it is in a throttle range wherein its movement can control only the throttle. The remote-control device includes a throttle drive control arrangement which opens and closes the throttle valve in relation to the operation of the above mentioned remote-control lever in a manner which depends upon an operator selected operational mode made via a mode select switch.

  • Patent number: 5157833
Abstract: A guide pin-manufacturing method includes the steps of plating a stepped cylindrical main portion (which is formed of brass or another non-magnetic material) with a hard, thick chromium plating layer by rotating the main portion in a plating liquid, forming a large number of minute grooves in the entire surface of the main body such that the grooves extend in the circumferential direction of the main body, and forcibly fitting two collars around the respective ends of the main portion. By execution of these steps, a guide pin to be arranged inside a data cartridge is manufactured. The guide pin arranged in the data cartridge guides the magnetic tape such that the magnetic tape travels in a stable manner.

  • Patent number: 5109809
Abstract: A temperature control system for a water-cooled internal combustion engine suitable for use on outboard motors and the like. A water pathway extends along two water-jacketed engine portions. A water supply control means allows a water supply to be selectively directed into one of two possible flow paths within the water pathway. In one flow path direction the water supply is warmed as it passes through the first water-jacketed engine portion so that heated water then passes on to warm the engine in the vicinity of the second water-jacketed engine portion. In the other flow path direction, cool water first passes through the second water-jacketed engine portion and then passes on to the first water-jacketed engine portion, thereby cooling the regions in proximity to both water-jacketed compartments.

  • Patent number: 5103931
Abstract: A number of embodiments of internal combustion engine exhaust systems each of which is effective to provide good silencing for exhaust gases through the use of an elastic diaphragm that dampens pulsations. In some embodiments, this elastic diaphragm forms a portion of a Helmholz resonator and in some the diaphragm is cooled by submerging in a cooling jacket of the engine or its exhaust system or by means of cooling air fins. Also, various arrangements are incorporated for adjusting or tuning the rigidity of the diaphragm. Furthermore, in some embodiment the diaphragm is suspended in such a way as to act as a vibration damping member between mechanical components of the exhaust system.

  • Patent number: 4882924
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a hollow tape guide for guiding magnetic recording tape. In this method, a round rod-like metal wire is sheared by shearing cutters into a blank a predetermined length, having a first end and a second end. Then, the blank is shaped and made into a blank having a shallow recess in the second end. The blank is then extruded and made into a cup-shaped blank closed at the first end by a bottom and having a predetermined length and a predetermined wall thickness. Finally, the bottom of the cup-shaped blank is punched out, thereby providing a hollow tape guide. The bottom is thick when the rod-like blank is too long, and is thin when the rod-like blank is too short, so that the cup-shaped blank may have the desired length and desired wall thickness.
