Patent number: 5407302Abstract: A different approach to tender assisted drilling which has the flexibility to be used with multiple jack-up rigs, and nearly any type of fixed offshore production platform. A skid base includes distinct capping beam feet and skid-off feet, the former adjustable to capping beam spacing and the latter restricted to support of the skid base upon cantilever beams. A special swivel mechanism and sliding mounting in the capping beam feet, and a vertical jack in the aft skid-off feet, enable the skid base to be transferred to the fixed platform simply by aligning them over the capping beams and depressurizing the skid-off feet. Thus, walking mechanisms may be swivelled and oriented upon the capping beams, notwithstanding relative movement between the jack-up rig and the platform. The skid base is simply walked across from the cantilever beams to the platform.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1993Date of Patent: April 18, 1995Assignee: Santa Fe International Corp.Inventors: Charles N. Patent number: 4144439Abstract: A pair of pipe ends are first prepared prior to welding to provide highly accurate guide surfaces. Secondly, a welding torch carriage arrangement is provided which engages the exterior surfaces of the abutting pipe ends to be welded, which carriage is guided around the circumference of the pipe ends in conjunction with the guide surfaces provided thereon. Thirdly, a back-up band arrangement is provided interiorly of the joint to be welded. An expandable band is employed to provide a mold on the interior of the joint into which the weld puddle is flowed which may be made of any appropriate material, but preferably is copper. The back-up band is carried on a set of rounding jacks which engage the facing pipe ends and exert a circumferentially uniform radial force on the pipes. This serves to round the ends equally and bring them into coaxial alignment with each other in the vicinity of the joint. The back-up band bridges the joint and expands to form a closed or semi-sealed chamber around the joint.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1977Date of Patent: March 13, 1979Assignee: Santa Fe International Corp.Inventors: Nuke M. Patent number: 4139222Abstract: A quick connect/disconnect coupling assembly particularly adapted for underwater use, having a pair of coupling members, one of which is mounted on a relatively rigid structure, and a sleeve mounted over the first coupling member for relative axial and rotational movement. The sleeve is guided by a single or double J slot between axially extended locking and axially retracted unlocking positions. In the locking position, a cammed surface on the inside of the sleeve engages a ball and socket arrangement on the coupling members to prevent the coupling members from becoming unlocked; in the axially retracted unlocking position, the cammed surface of the sleeve is moved away from the ball and socket arrangement to permit free radial movement of the ball out of the socket and relative axial movement of the coupling members into and out of coupling engagement with each other. The sleeve is lockable in the axially extended locking position to provide a positive lock.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1977Date of Patent: February 13, 1979Assignee: Santa Fe International Corp.Inventor: Sven Loland

Patent number: 4112695Abstract: The sea sled includes a pair of pontoons mounting depending rollers for straddling a pipeline disposed on the sea bottom. Water jets fluidize the sea bottom to form a trench in which the pipeline settles. The slurry formed by the water jets is removed from the trench by the eductor system which includes a pair of conduits each having a suction inlet at its lower end for location within the trench, a discharge at its upper end, a pair of pump nozzles each having an inlet external to the associated conduit and an outlet within the conduit directed toward the corresponding discharge, and a pair of primary nozzles, the outlet ends of which respectively project into the inlet ends of the pump nozzles. A high pressure, low volume, fluid is pumped from the surface through the jet nozzles. Ambient fluid is entrained with the high pressure, low volume fluid emanating from the jet nozzles in the respective pump nozzles to deliver low pressure, high volume fluid to their corresponding discharges.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1977Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: Santa Fe International Corp.Inventors: Nuke Ming Chang, Elmer R.
