  • Patent number: 6170162
Abstract: A rotary displacement measuring apparatus includes an axle whose rotary displacement is to be determined, with the axle being mounted to rotate about its long axis. An emitter disk is mounted on the axle to define a plurality of concentric tracks circumscribing the axle to rotate as the axle rotates, with each of the tracks being segmented to define a plurality of spaced-apart, conductive sections for producing electric fields when energized. Also included is a voltage source for energizing the conductive sections. A detector is disposed adjacent to the tracks of the emitter disk and includes a plurality of sensors, each positioned adjacent a respective track to detect the electric fields of the respective track as the axle and tracks are rotated. The detector produces signals representing the detection of the electric fields as the emitter disk is rotated, and these signals provide an indication of the rotary displacement of the tracks and thus of the axle.

  • Patent number: 6165155
Abstract: A low-profile multipathway automatic drug delivery system utilizing a battery powered control pad coupled to a disposable drug storage and delivery system and strapped to a patient's limb or torso. A preprogrammed or on-demand drug administration sequence is input to the control pad. When a drug is to be administered, the control pad ignites a high energy density propellant charge in the drug delivery system. Expanding propellant gas exerts pressure on a drug in a second chamber and forces it from the storage reservoir.

  • Patent number: 6160478
Abstract: A system for remotely monitoring a person's physical activity includes at least one accelerometer capable of measuring both the magnitude and direction of an acceleration. The acceleration data is processed to determine motion/position status and to decide whether there is a likelihood that the person has fallen, and if so, the likely direction that the person has fallen. Based on this data, the likely severity of the fall is calculated. If the severity of the fall is outside an acceptable limit, an alert state is reached upon which a signal is communicated to a remote monitoring unit. Likewise, various physiological conditions may be measured to determine the existence of any anomalous vital signs that would trigger an alarm state. If so, the remote monitoring unit will sound or otherwise communicate an alarm to a person associated with the remote monitoring unit.

  • Patent number: 6138706
Abstract: A condensate trap comprises a trap element 12 disposed in a trap chamber 6, and a sensor chamber 16 containing a sensor element 24 for monitoring the performance of the trap element 12. The sensor chamber 16 communicates with the trap chamber 6 through a first passageway 26 and one or more second passageways 28. The first passageway 26 opens into the sensor chamber 16 at an upper region of the sensor chamber, while the second passageway 28 opens at a lower region, so that the sensor element 24 is situated at a level above the lowermost part of the port at which the second passageway 28 opens into the sensor chamber 16. If the trap element 12 does not close the outlet 10 properly, condensate accumulating in the sensor chamber 16 will be forced into the trap chamber 6 through the second passageway 28, and the level will fall to expose the sensor element 24 which will react to provide an alarm signal.

  • Patent number: 6086562
Abstract: An automatic injection device includes a drug-filled vessel having a flexible membrane over a first opening thereof and a puncturable seal in a wall thereof, a hollow needle attached at a first end to the flexible membrane and having a sharp end positioned proximate the puncturable seal housing. A pressure source such as a combustible propellant provides a compressed gas above the flexible membrane to force the membrane into the drug-filled vessel, forcing the hollow needle through the puncturable seal and the drug contained in the vessel through the hollow needle. After the drug has been substantially evacuated from the vessel, the membrane is allowed to return to its pre-expanded state thus retracting the hollow needle into the vessel. Preferably, the flexible membrane is an elastomeric material having a plurality of concentrically configured corrugations to allow expansion of the membrane into the vessel.

  • Patent number: 6066361
Abstract: A method of coating a surface of a filament. In particular, the invention rotates a member (13) about a first axis (54), which will rotate a tubular member (16), which is rotatably coupled to the rotating member at an angle to the first axis, through a plane and about a longitudinal axis (56) of the tubular member that is co-planer to the plane. This is done to assist in the depositing of a uniform material onto the filament that extends through the tubular member and through a deposition area (40). It is important for the method to maintain the deposition area at an intersection of the first axis, longitudinal axis and plane, while the filament is being rotated in step. The method provides for adjusting the deposition area to expose a different length of the filament to the deposition of material thereon.

  • Patent number: 6063200
Abstract: A fixture apparatus for material deposition or processing on a long, flexible, nonplanar, filamentary substrate has a tubular member for holding the filamentary substrate rotatably disposed on a base. An opening is formed in the tubular member through which material is deposited on the surface of the filamentary substrate. Moveable tubes are each slidingly disposed in the tubular member on either side of the opening. The tubes and/or the tubular member hold the filamentary substrate on both sides of a deposition area on the substrate to maintain the straight configuration of the long, flexible, filamentary substrate. The tubes and/or tubular member also physically masks the filamentary substrate to prevent material deposition outside the deposition area on the substrate. The base has a circular path and a rotating member. A wheel is coupled to one side of the tubular member and is rotatably disposed on the circular path of the base.

  • Patent number: 6007310
Abstract: A volumetric pump for administering intravenous fluids to a patient includes a first housing having an elongate cavity therein with an open and a closed end. A resilient sheet of material having a centrally-located aperture covers the open end, and a pump shaft is slidably disposed through the aperture to form a sphincter seal therebetween. An inlet conduit leading from a fluid source (an IV bag) passes through the housing into the cavity near the open end thereof, and an outlet conduit leading to a fluid sink (the patient) passes through the housing from the cavity near the closed end thereof. A drive shaft is attached to the pump shaft to drive it back and forth in reciprocating motion inwardly and outwardly of the cavity to produce, respectively, a positive pressure forcing fluid out of the outlet conduit to the fluid sink, and a negative pressure forcing fluid from the fluid source through the inlet conduit.

  • Patent number: 5941691
Abstract: A pressure powered pump has valve members 18, 20 operated by a float acting through an overcenter mechanism 24. The overcenter mechanism has a valve actuating lever 36, on which are provided actuating pins 46, 48 for engagement with the respective valve members 18, 20. When the valves are closed, there is a substantial clearance a between the actuating pins 46, 48 and the respective valve member or its stem 50. This causes the actuating pin 46, 48 to apply an impact to the-valve member 18, 20, so assisting its opening movement. Stops 58, 60 are provided to arrest the valve actuating member 36 at its stable end position, so avoiding high impacts being applied to the valve members 18, 20 when they close.

  • Patent number: 5938409
Abstract: A gas powered pump tank is alternately filled with liquid such as water at low pressure, and then emptied by gas pressure such as from pressurized steam. An auxiliary exhaust assist valve opens at a threshold pressure after switching from the pumping phase to the filling phase to more quickly vent the pressure in the tank and minimize obstruction of the incoming flow of liquid. The pump tank has inlet and outlet check valves for the liquid, permitting flow only in a positive pumping direction. A gas inlet valve and a primary gas exhaust valve are controlled by an alternating mechanism such as a float with a snap action toggle that opens one of the gas valves while closing the other. The auxiliary exhaust assist valve has a valve body spring biased inwardly of the tank, and opens at a pressure lower than the pumping pressure, thereby venting the tank more rapidly and also assisting in venting any additional steam produced by boiling of the water or other liquid.
