  • Patent number: 11001745
Abstract: Compounds, systems and method(s) for removing hydro-carbons from a hydrocarbon-containing reservoir. Various N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones, such as N-octyl-2-pyrrolidone, alone in hot water or steam, or in conjunction with other surfactants and/or solvents are injected into petroleum reservoirs containing heavy oil or bitumen to accomplish one or more functions: (1) increase rate of petroleum production compared to that produced using steam and/or hot water alone; (2) decrease steam to oil ratio; (3) extend life of a well by recovering more petroleum; (4) recover petroleum from wells that have been declared uneconomic using existing recovery methods; and/or (5) generally increase estimated petroleum reserves by reducing cost of production. The N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidones are most usefully applied in cyclic steam stimulation, steam drive or steam assisted gravity drainage operations after the initial rate of petroleum production has begun to decline.

  • Patent number: 9046407
Abstract: A system and method for measuring the liquid level in a tank or container is provided. The system can have a sensor string comprising a plurality of analog output hall-effect sensors and a computer readable memory containing sensor string information, a float having a magnetic field and positionable relative to the sensor string, and a controller containing at least one processing unit, at least one memory and a sensor string interface for connecting the controller to the sensor string. The system can be operative to obtain the sensor string information from the at least one memory of the sensor string, obtain a preloaded waveform indicating the output of a sensor relative to the position of the float and approximate the position of the float relative to the sensor string using the normalized output of at least one of the sensors and the preloaded waveform.

  • Patent number: 8590515
Abstract: Described are methods and systems for powering an Otto-cycle engine using gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG). The Otto-cycle engine can be powered by determining a quantity of the gasoline and a quantity of the CNG to deliver to a cylinder of the engine during an engine cycle such that combustion within the cylinder occurs at a pre-determined air-fuel ratio; delivering the quantity of the gasoline to the cylinder via a gasoline injector and delivering the quantity of the CNG to the cylinder via a CNG injector such that the gasoline and the CNG combust during the same combustion event; and combusting the gasoline and the CNG within the cylinder. Delivering CNG and gasoline to the cylinder using separate injectors allows the quantities of CNG and gasoline to vary in response to engine operating conditions, which allows the fuel mixture to be adjusted to satisfy engine power and emissions criteria.

  • Patent number: 6957171
Abstract: A gaseous fuel storage system included in a vehicle to supply fuel to a power source (e.g., an engine, fuel cell and the like) is diagnosed and controlled by a monitoring/evaluation and control system. Various parameters with reference to gas temperature, gas pressure, gas density and damage and shock of a vessel containing the pressurized gas are provided by respective sensors mounted on and in vessels of a gas storage system. A control module determines whether maintenance of the vessels is required based on the sensed parameters. If maintenance is necessary, the components will be replaced with new ones or the entire gas storage system or the vessel will be replaced. If necessary, a warning is provided to avoid operation of the power source and the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6785616
Abstract: A method for determining if deterioration in structural integrity of a pressure vessel, having both sensor and oscillator affixed to or embedded in said exterior surface thereof. An electrical current is provided to the oscillator so as to cause said oscillator to oscillate and produce a mechanical disturbance to the exterior surface and cause a detectable natural frequency response of said pressure vessel. The resultant natural frequency response is detected and recorded. After a period of elapsed time, the natural frequency response is again obtained. It is compared with the recorded natural frequency response first obtained, and if there be a difference therebetween, such as a shift in the frequencies at which the natural resonances occur, or a decrease or increase in the amplitude of one or more of the natural frequency resonances, then a flag is raised. An apparatus for determining if deterioration in structural integrity of a pressure vessel, and a pressure vessel, is further disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6758233
Abstract: A gas regulator (14) is provided for regulating the pressure of a gas flowing from a source (12) of the gas under pressure to a device (24) for using the gas. The regulator (14) includes a housing (26) and a pressure reducing valve (36) in the housing for controlling the flow of gas from an inlet (28) under pressure to an outlet (32) at a regulated pressure. The pressure reducing valve is controlled by a pressure responsive member (40, 44) which is displaced by operating feed and bleed valves (50) coupled to a control chamber (46) of the pressure responsive member. The feed and bleed valves are operated by a high speed solenoid actuator (68). The bleed valve is vented to the outlet of the housing from the control chamber which is maintained at a higher pressure. The high speed solenoid actuator (68) is operated by a controller (18) for controllably varying the output pressure as desired.

  • Patent number: 6687597
Abstract: A powertrain controller of a vehicle provides fuel injection pulses based on gasoline operation. The pulse widths of the fuel injection pulses are modified with reference to air temperature, engine speed, and exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) content to control fuel injectors for an alternative fuel such as natural gas. The EGO content, based on alternative fuel operation, is detected and compared to a desired air-fuel ratio or desired fuel trims to provide error information that is used to adjust the modification of the pulse widths. In response to the error information, a neural network (as an example) dynamically adjust the pulse widths of the alternative fuel injection based on the weights of measured, detected engine speed, EGO, universal exhaust gas oxygen, or air temperatures. The engine operating on alternative fuel is provided with the proper mixture of alternative fuel and air to respond to various engine loads and meet emission standards.

  • Patent number: 6138509
Abstract: The invention provides an improved float and float system for use in the monitoring of fluid levels, particularly in small diameter wells by way of a cable and float system. The float system includes a number of centralizers which hold the float cable near the center of the well casing and thus reduce the friction of the cable on the casing walls. The addition of weights on the float cable, either or both below the float and between the float and the top of the well casing, can improve the accuracy and operation of the system even further. A truncated cone-shaped float is provided, with a number of fins displaced evenly around the circumference of the float.
